Just ordered 285/65-18 BRG ATs and AS 1.5"

--made a typo in the title and it won't let me fix it...ordered BFGs not BRG haha--

Just ordered a set of BFG ATs in 285/65-18 for my 2005 SCab. $944 shipped from discount tire.

Also ordered the AS 1.5" leveling kit. They said it should raise it up just shy of 2" which works for me since the rear is a little more then 2.25" higher. I tow my boat and a rather large utility trailer on a frequent basis so I wanted to maintain some rake.

I'd have gone with the 2.5" and AAL but my truck lives in a parking garage and with the 285/65-18s and the AS 1.5" it will be a tight squeeze as it is.

I'll put some pics up in about a week or so.

I am very interested to see how this turns out. Most go with 2.5 and 305s.

Hello Davewvu86.....

I just saw a set of BFG 285/65-18's on an F150 Lariat yesterday, and they looked good ! Not too small at all, IMPO. I guess if a guy had had 305's or 315's in the past, 285's might look a bit small..... But again, they looked great to me !

I think I'm going with 295/70-17 Nitto Terra Grapplers, because they get good reviews, and cost less than 285 BFG AT's..... But if I were going to go with BFG's (which I very well might, the next time around... depending on how the Nitto's work for me) I'd go with the 285's as well.

BTW, I will also be towing a boat (all the time) albeit, a very light one. None the less, I think a 2 1/2" lift might be just a tad too much for me too.... So I've decided on a pair of Bilstein adjustable height shocks, which will not only give me a range of 0" to 2", but will also give me a nicer ride than the stock shocks. Kind of pricey though.... $300 for the pair... then install... and at least an alignment check, afterwards... if not a few little adjustments...

Peace,
Fish

PS, Be sure to post a shot of your truck with the new tires and 1 1/2" level...

I'll get some pics up as soon as I get everything installed. The leveling kit was only $79 from AS and I'll put it on and align it myself at my buddy's shop.

I went with the BFG instead of the Nitto's because my soon to be father-in-law has a set of BFG on his f250. He carrys heavy loads and tows trailers in excess of 10,000 on a regular basis and with about 55k miles on his current set, they still look great and have plenty of tread.

Anything will be a dramatic improvement stock Goodyears which only lasted 36k. Those things are crap.

BTW if you need tires, get to discounttiredirect.com before 5/21 as that's when the sale ends. They're the cheapest I could find by at least $100

haha you still have that thing? I figured you sold it when you bought the new one. I'll have everything installed tonight assuming I can get out of dinner with the woman's grandparents. Otherwise it'll have to wait until the weekend.

The leveling kit showed up on Fri. The paint on it leaves something to be desired. I'm going to throw a coat or two of rustolium (sp) on it before I put it in.

I'd definately suggest that you go with the powder coated option. Then again, the truck lives in a garage now so I don't think it'll matter too much for me.

Alright, got everything in. Didn't take too long. It looks great. I'll get pics up when I get a chance. There's no rubbing or anything like that. Also, I coated the leveling kit with a rust proof enamel I found laying around the shop. Hopefully that'll help with salt and moisture.

The BFGs make very little road noise and ride better then the Goodyear Wranglers that came stock. I was actually suprised by the nice ride considering I was going from a C to an E load range.

The leveling kit was a breeze though The directions could be perfected...

Couple tips for you guys:

After you reinstall the lower strut bolt, use a pry bar wedged between the spring and upper control arm to force the upper control arm down on to the spindle. This will create enough pressure to stop the spindle bolt from spinning while you put the nut on. Jacking the lower control arm up doesn't work very well by itself.

Loosen the tie rods before you put the tires on and lower the truck to align it. Much easier. Those bastards are tight!!!

When I talked to them they told me that the 1.5 yielded 1-5/8 to 1-3/4.
Im beginning to think that they really dont know and just throw out some numbers.
Hopefully my 2" I just ordered it gonna be right.
Funny how everybody is across the board with these kits.

I have a 2.5" AS but I never measured it. Its looks good and thats all that matters to me. I also tow a 3800lbs travel trailer and it sags very slightly in the back with it hooked up. I am going to add the bigger rear block or the AAL.

I think part of the problem is that you have a 2005, ive got a 07, and blue a 08. I think the new trucks have less rake to them then the older trucks.
