Cool New ProComp 33x12.5x17 AT Tires On 4x4 SCrew.

OK, I finally went out and bought four new ProComp tires and had them installed on my truck.

It was done by a shop called 4 Wheel Direct, in El Cajon, CA. - http://www.fourwheeldirect.com I took advantage of the "Buy three, get one free" deal going on from ProComp. (If you don't ask for it, you may not get it) I paid $525 out the door for the tires, mounting and balancing, tax and a tip (yea right). They were busy and slow, but seemed to do very good work. (Although how hard is it to mount tires? I used to do it as a 16 year old at a Shell station in high school with no previous training or instruction.)

So far, here's my assessment of the tires vs. the stock 265/70/17 Goodyears after 20 highway miles: The new tires are a little louder - but not bad. They give the truck a better, more aggressive look for sure. No rubbing on full-tight turns so far and looks like there's enough room to clear - no problem. The tire diameter is within an inch of the stock tires and they look a little bigger in the wheel wells than the stock tires (about the same), but they're much wider (8" vs. 10" at the pavement) Handling around corners is better, but the ride seems a little more harsh - but not bad. Overall the tires should be just what I was looking for and I can't wait to get them off road and in the snow soon.

I'm going to try cranking the torsion bars for an extra inch or so in the front and see how that works out.

I'll try to post some pictures of the stock vs. the new tires soon.

I too have the original 17's. For the cost it is cheaper to keep the wheels and get better tires. 525 VS 900 for 16" wheels and tires.
Did you notice any low-end loss? I may try to upgrade some day, no hurry, but I don't want to have to get gears.

Cool

In response to question about low-end loss power: There's no loss of low end power at all with the new tires. The only thing I can think of is that the tires weigh more and therefore add more to the total weight of the truck which, in theory, may slow the truck. But, in real world situations, it has the same performance as before.

I really think the bigger tires should have come on the truck as stock tires. When I see another stock Screw 4x4 the tires look way too small for the truck. Now, it looks way better.

Pictures will follow soon.

The wheels I have are the stock Lariat, chrome looking 17" wheels. I think they are five spoke type with and indentation in the middle of the spoke. They are 7.5" wide and they fit the new tire just fine. It looks great and have even had random, non-car/truck people tell me they have noticed the difference and they really like the look.

I had these tires installed too, on Wednesday. 4wheel Parts Warehouse was having a sale, they were local, and they had a set in stock. Done!

I have a 98 SC 4x4 ORP, and I had them put on the stock 98 ORP whees. They fit just fine, and don't rub at all. They made the front of the truck look a little low, so I cranked the torsion bars 1" up, and I have an alignment scheduled for today.

Nice tires, nice price, can't complain.

Dubin,
Great looking Crew! I also went to fourwheel direct. I had them put BFG 33/12.5/16.5 on my Supercrew. I traded in my BFG 285's for the wider look. They gave me a great deal. I also got the Airaid from them. Your right, they were a little slow but did a great job. I had the torsion bars set up 3/4 of an inch to make it fit. They did an alignment and now my truck drives better than when it was new. They put a cam kit in. It now turns better than when new. Where do you live in San Diego? I'm in Pacfic Beach. Maybe we could get together to talk about our future mods. : ) Love this truck!

BTR - Maybe in North Dakota they like the look of the white letters out...but it's just not a good look if you have done any tire mods. Also, maybe it's because the truck was clean in the before and dirty in the after pics. (I had to test the tires on the beach after the install and they were about 10 times better than the stock Goodyears) By the way, these pics were taken a few days ago (12/26/00) how's the weather there? SDO is 77 degrees without a cloud in the sky, I'm going golfing today how about you?

FO - Live in Bay Park and am in PB a lot. I'll keep an eye out for your truck.

Cool

eddiepreston -

Thanks for the compliment on the truck.

After I had the tires installed, the ride was a bit bumpy so I went back to have them re-do the balance on all four tires. The result was the same, at 65 MPH it bumps up and down a bit. I don't think the shop I had them installed was very good at balancing bigger tires and so I am planning to go to a specialist to get the tires matched and dynamic balanced, whatever that means. I'll report back with the results.

I love the tires though, and still think they should be standard equipment issue.

Question

OKAY....I have a 4x4 2001 SCREW and 4 wheel parts wharehouse is telling me NO WAY on a larger tire. I have the ford 17" wheels with 265/70/17's and asked about the ProComps in the 33/12.5/17 and they said i need a 4" lift. Have you lifted your truck? I have looked into a 305/70/16 with 16x8 rims and they still say NO WAY....HELP! Just looking for a larger tire to fill the wheel well!

Thumbs down

HarleyD,

Either your shop doesn't know what they are doing or they are trying to sell you stuff you don't need. The stock tires on the 17" rims are 31.7" tall which is just about 1 inch shorter than the 33's (the 33's aren't really). What is a dead giveaway is the statement that you couldn't use the 305/70/16 tires.

Just so you know how it works, the first number is the width of the tire, the second the ratio of the sidewall height to width, and the third the wheel diameter. So, the 305 is a whopping 40 millimeters wider which translates into 28 millimeters in sidewall height difference (.7 * 40), which we divide by 25.4 to cnvert millimeters to inches and get 1.1" of additional sidewall height but then we subtract 1/2" because you dropped and inch in diameter on the wheel so you get a whole .6" of addition clearance on the group and fill of your wheel well. I can't imagine it wouldn't fit.
