Truck Shut off at Light

I was drive tonight and when i stopped at a red light my truck just shut off. It started up with no prob but when i put in drive it shut off again and the engine light came on and the battery light also. all the electricals are working fine so i dont think it had to do with the battery at all. i finally got the truck pulled over and look to see if anything was leaking and when i switch to any gear it would shut off. I tried it once more and now its working with no probs at all. Anyone have an idea what it could be? This may have nothing to do with the tranny, but maybe someone thats had a simular prob can tell me whats wrong. Ill go ahead and mention i had a new tranny put in about a month ago, but have not had any noticable prob.

Sorry about the truck dying, sounds like a bad sensor or something. I was wondering how you like those 4.10 gears. Would you recommend them??

truck shut off..

I may be wrong, but having had the same situation not too long ago , here is what I discovered.
I had just completed my burn out at the track in my Lightning and as I pulled up to stage, my truck shut off. I attempted to start it several times to no avail.
After I was pushed off the track, I turned the ignition to the "off"
position and tried again,. The truck then started.
I discovered that when I was attempting to start the truck when it initally stalled, that I was not turning the ignition "off" before I attempted to start it.
This all leads up to the root cause, which was a small piece of dirt
(clear protectant) that was not cleaned off the computer (ECU)
when the chip was installed.
I notice you have a chip in your truck. I suggest that you remove your chip and check for the condition I had with mine.
Hope this helps.

Marc

well i couldnt really find anything out. a friend of mine told me to get my alternator checked out, and it is ok. just for the hell of it, i took out the chip just to see if that could have been a prob. i took it out and noticed my truck is not idle as high as it was and doesnt rumble as much. im gonna check to see if this could be the prob, so far its working. ill try this for about a week and when i feel comfortable on weather its the chip or not, ill prob clean the connectors again really good and try the chip on again.

Hello there...

I had the same situation exactly with my 99 xlt the problem on mine was the multifunction switch...The switch failed in the neutral area...When I put it into gear it would die because the switch was not telling the computer the correct position of the shifter for running..They changed the switch and that was that was the problem....Good luck

To me, it sounds like a tranny torque converter problem...take it back to the shop where you had the trans replaced.

It sounds like it could be chip problem. If you find that cleaning the contacts really well doesn't work. I would then take it back to the tranny shop and say "Here, something's still screwed up" because I'm sure you should have some kind of warranty on the tranny work, right?
Only idea I have is maybe the transmission range sensor, which I think someone above might of mentioned as a multifunction switch. It is a multifuntion switch but that is not it's correct name. It's the sensor on the side of the tranny with a few wires and linkage going to it. It tells the computer what position the tranny is in, it's your neutral safety switch, and contorls the backup lights as well.
Only other ideas of the problem I know of is a loose tranny filter, which would still be giving you problems.
DO you have a MIL light on? If it was a sensor problem there might be a pending code (pending codes do not turn the MIL on)in there. It may be worth while to get it scanned MIL light on or not.

Sounds a lot like a vacuum leak. Before I corrected the leak on the PVC hose, the truck would crank up fine. But when the RPM's dropped to shift into foward it died everytime. I fixed the leak at the back of the manifold and it now cranks and runs like a cham.

well i got the engine checked out today and everything seems to be ok. later tonight i was driving and my truck downshifted hard, also when i take off from a stop it revs high then catches gear. im definately thinking its the tranny now. the tranny is suppose to be a rebuild, but now its slipping, downshifting and totally screwed up. i took it to the tranny shop today and there still looking at it and say theres something in the torque converter. arent they suppose to change out the torque converter when putting a new tranny? what about all the grinding and slipping my tranny does. they can just change the torque convter out and say its ok? isnt there gonna be alot of transmission wear cased by all the slipping and downshifting? do they have to rebuild the tranny again? its all under warranty. please give me your opinion of what to do. there keeping the truck for a few days also, arent i entiled to a rent a car or loaner? they said they dont do that...what can i do?

You could try cleaning the IAC. It's only two 8mm bolts to remove it, then spray the carbon out of it with TB cleaner. Using Q-tips helps alot with getting the carbon out of it also. The IAC is right above the TB to the right side. This has been causing idling and stall problems on these trucks. Be sure to check the PCV elbow at the back of the intake also, it would cause the same symptoms. Good luck, and let us know what happens!,,,,98

LoCo F150,
Last week I had a problem with my truck stopping and then it would not start. One of the fuses was not making contact in the fuse holder. When you checked the fuse it looked ok but it was not making contact so no power was being sent where it belongs. Check all the fuses that control the PCM and the Coil Packs. Bend the tabs (slightly) on the fuses to make sure they are making contact in the fuse panel. There are fuses under the dash and under the hood. Check them all. The owner’s manual will tell you which ones are for the PCM.
