Question Living on rice and water to pay for truck?

I have been reading all of the owners letters hear at F150 online and have noticed that the majority of the owners have trucks that are in the $26,000-$33,000 price range.

My question is this, how the hell can all of these people afford to pay 30 grand for a pick-up truck? It seems most of the people are from the South and Midwest. I thought salaries in these areas were much lower than the Northeast where I am from.

I make decent money but could never afford a $30,000 truck. Are you guys leasing or something?

Do you live on rice and water?

How do you do it?

Sorry for posting in the engines category, seems like the most popular place.

I also have gone the way of purchasing a used vehicle. It was that or lease and that's not somthing I wanted to do.

I also think that I make pretty good money but considered the price of purchasing a new vehicle, with the options I was looking for, a little out of my range. (I'm also making another car payment, house payment, raising a child, saving for retirement.........)

On the other hand I fully expect my truck to last for many years. Assuming I don't get tired of running it, I expect it'll be around for a good number of years and the cost will seem more reasonable after 12-15 years.....

Thumbs up

Started working when I was 15 saved all my money, lived at home till 22, got married 23, graduated college make decent money still save my money. In other words I saved as much as I could to make a good down payment to keep payments low. I am now 27 and bought my first brand new truck back in febuary of 1999 traded it in this past febuary for a 2001. still have plenty of money in the bank to play with. Never really spent much money on anything big.

Special order and just get what you need. No fancy interior, no automatic transmission, no 4wd, no extended cab, no tow package, just a basic truck. Mine had a sticker of about 21 and I paid 18 something. About what a car would cost. Left myself a few bucks to get a cap for camping.

My truck is no XLT. But for 16k out the door I can live with roll up windows. Two years and 25,000 trouble free miles so far. I love my truck.

I have a 97 that was paid for Jan 2000.

You want to know the key? Buy quality, keep if for a long time, next one you buy pay cash. I paid $23,000 put down $5000 and then ended up paying off at the end $7000. This is probably my last truck for at least 15 years. Hence I do take good care of it!!

Saved my money and paid in cash. Hundred dollar bills are great leverage.

I don't fall in the category you've mentioned, but: creative financing?

Since we like having new cars every few years, we leased both of ours. May seem like throwing money away to some, but we work hard for our money and spend it in a way that puts a smile on our face when we leave work.
