Unhappy Rear seal surprise

Went to go get my oil changed yesterday and the guy at the place told me that my rear seal was leaking. I went down into the pit with him and sure enough the thing was leaking. Only have 34,000 on the truck. Kinda torqued about it though.
Thank God for the warrnty!!!!!!!!!!

The rear one on my 97 f-150 went out around 23 or 24 thousand, and the front one on my Explorer went out around 28 thousand... I'll have to see how long it lasts on the new truck!

Your trucks -- auto or manual?

Is the thrust bearing on the rear-most bearing along with the seal?

Ford has been notorious for this problem, ever since the first 302. A lot of rear main seal have broken. I think it's just a problem to deal with. Sorry for the crappy answer.

What did you see, some oil on the converter housing-if so before you tear into the tranny check the head gaskets, common problem that everyone thinks is the rear main initially because of the location the oil collects.

Oh, I didn't read the post close enough.... are you talking about the rear main seal on the engine, or the pinion seal on the differential? Mine were both pinion seals. Sorry.

Harley is right on. I have a 99 5.4 SC and found oil dripping from the tranny bell housing. I thought for sure it was the rear main seal. But after having it checked out at the shop, found out it was the notorious (for 99) passenger side head gasket leak. Also had piston slap. Cured both problems by replacing the engine with a 2000 model.

GIJoeCam:
I have 9K on my truck and noticed that my pinion seal is leaking. Is this a design flaw or just bad luck? Time to go to the dealership. Maybe they can paint my rust colored drive shaft while they're at it.
