Which oil is best?
Getting ready for my first oil change. Which is best-amsoil or mobil one? Also any opinion on the filter? Lastly, I've read in some posts to 'flush the engine' before the synthetic...I feel stupid asking, but how?
Thanks.

If you plan to change you oil every 3-5k miles, then I would go with Mobil 1 since it's readily available. For extended drain intervals, then Amsoil. Motorcaraft oil filter from Walmart should be fine. Seeing how it's your first oil change, you probably don't need to flush the engine. Regards,

Motorcraft does make synth oils now, but here in Canada, they run about 12 bucks a quart, and that's with an employee discount. I'm not sure what they run 'msrp'.
That's about double what Mobil 1 costs here, and Amsoil is just plain impossible to find. If anyone is selling amsoil in Edmonton, I need some for my rear diff, or else i'll have to shell out the big bucks for RedLine. Something like 14 dollars a quart. Yikes!

What do you guys think about switching from regular to synthetic oil? My '92 4.9L I6 has always been fed regular oil (castrol gtx 10w40) and doesn't leak or burn a drop at 108,000 miles. I have been thinking about switching to synthetic now that the engine is getting old but i have heard that switching can cause gaskets to shrink and leak. Is this true? Is synthetic worth the extra cost since i change it and flush it every 2K miles?

Ford4Ever,
If you are changing your oil ever 2K miles and you haven't had any problems so far I would not change now. With your oil change habits you engine should last a long time.

Ford4ever,
Great oil changing habit!! I agree w/BAR4, but I don't think you need to flush the engine w/each oil change-i would tend to think that it is a little harsh on the motor. but just my .02 worth. If 'dino oil' has worked so far, I would stick with it

Ford4ever,
I would definitely recommend switching to Amsoil. If you look at their website, they will tell you that their synthetic is not only completely compatible with regular motor oil (you don't need to flush your engine), but is recommended for older engines. The public is getting ripped off by purchasing non-synthetic motor oil because you have to change it at leat 4 times a year, and it's not nearly the quality of 100% synthetic oil that only needs to be changed every 25k or once a year.

Don't mean to sound ignorant but you only need to chage amsoil every 25k miles? Never hear of it.
