Post Opinion needed! Should i buy a f-150?

Just fell onto this site by mistake and thought, if anywhere this would be the place to ask this. I now own a 96 Ranger Splash, reg. cab w/4.0 2wd w/36000 miles on it. Well, i now want something bigger. There are a bazillion Ford dealerships around me and i am really fond of the 96 F-150, ext. cab, 5.0 w 4x4. Are these reliable? Have any of you had problems besides average wear and tear? I found a 96 Eddie Baure, ext. cab,5.0,56000 miles w/4x4 and its $15899. Is that too much? It is in great shape. Any info would be appreciated.

Cool

Yes,definitely buy an F-150,lol. With that said,I only paid about 5 grand more for my 98 Ext Cab XLT,that sounds a little high, great shape or not. Unless you really like the older body style, you can get a newer one for almost the same price.
They are reliable as any,I guess. I have never heard anything bad about them. I was working at a dealer before and after they came out....... I kind of like the previous style, too. It looks bigger, with an impressive front design,,,good luck on your descision, what ever you end up with,,,,,,,98

Ranger,

I have a '95 Supercab 4x4 302 XLT. (Whew!)
No problems at a little over 80,000 miles. There are plenty of mods available too.

That price seems a little high, but they charge too much for the Eddie Bauer package in my opinion. I think you could save at least $1000 or so if you bought something other than the EB.

Most of the Ford trucks prior to '97 are reliable and built tough; however stay away from the post '97 urban cowboy trucks..they're built to break

I would certainly look into an F-150. If you are not sure on the value, check out http://carpoint.msn.com/homepage/def...78628bd84cb392 or www.kbb.com for an idea on current values. The 97-2000 models are rated very high..and the pre 97 models also have high marks.

That's seems a little high. As long as it's in near impecable condition, and it needs absolutely nothing, then maybe $11,000 max. You have to remember, the 97 F-150 came out in Jan 96, as an early release 97. That automatically made the Pre-97 trucks "worthless". The new F-series has been such a success, that I don't see a reasoning behind getting anything older. Unless your talking old, old F-series. The 78-96 F-series trucks were known for rusting badly. I would hold off a little, and shop. You can get a 97 Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4L for about $13,000 or $14,000. Much nicer truck too. I have a friend who has a 97 Lariat 4x4, ORP, with 43,000 miles on it. Original owner, black/gold, loaded. CD-Changer and all. 4.6L though. Electronic shift-on-the-fly 4WD, fleet side ext cab. Has to be wetsanded and buffed. It's black, and he used to take it in the woods hunting al the time. Sweet ride though. It's in Tampa, FL. E-mail me if interested. Not sure if he would even sell it, but he always talks about a new F-350 V10 4x4.

Hey Lariat. You sure? 13-14,000 for a 97 4x4 w/5.4. I can't touch a 2wheel v6 reg. cab for that around here. I'm somewhat scared as hell to buy from a private owner, god only knows what they do to it and then not tell ya whats wrong w/it. Same could be said w/dealers too i guess. I saw that a 96 5.0 only has 199hp and the 97 and up v6's have 210hp. Is that true? I won't be towing any horses or stuff like that, just an ocasional drag race at red lights. I just might get a 98 cause i heard the 97's are POS's. Is that true or not?

Hey 98screamer. Yeah, i like The Cramps too. I saw then in 96' in Detroit then went to Chicago the following week-end and saw them again at The House Of Blues. Great band! Definatly check out Splatter. By the way hows the reliability on your 98? Any problems?

hey dondo7, what year is yours? I have a 97 with 57,000 miles and the only part of it that has broken is the front bumper. And that was because I nailed a Blazer with it. No problems out of my truck and I am a teenager, I drive like one, mud like one, and I drive my truck like a sports car. If that aint hell on it I dont know what is.

I happen to like all the fords, the pre-97 are built tough, but i really dislike the front suspension and the way the steering gets sloppy, the front sag (lowering over time) and how the ball joints wear out. I had to redo the front end on my 80 4x4, fun truck, but i am sticking with my 93 ranger 4 cyl 2wd, economical, and fun in the snow! I miss having 4 wheel drive at my finger tips though. The ranger is going to hold me over till i have the money, or finish college and can afford a IFS ford (f-150, ranger) or a solid axle SD.....hoping for the SD!!!!
