5.4 enough?

the 5.4 is 260 h.p., the 5.3 chevy is 285, the 6.0 chevy is 300 plus and now dodge is going to offer a 5.7 liter at 345 h.p. and 365 ft lbs of torque @ 4,400 r.p.m. for those keeping score at home that put the ford dead *** last in the h.p. department. every time the horsepower war is brought up the same answers come back
#1 well we have more torque(the dodge now has more) and #2 i didnt buy my truck to race so i dont care, well apparently chevy and dodge think different.

i am not flaming ford, i love my supercrew, but how much longer is having the lowest horsepower and the crappiest gas milage going to be the way it is?

365 pounds of torque at 4400 rpms is worth less to me. I want it where ford puts it where it matters. I dont even drive a gasser but torque is where its at, I pull thats all I do.

that the typical response i expected. unless you pull a tractor around or are a wrecker driver the small advantage that the ford hold in the torque department will never be realized but i beat that 85 h.p.l advantage the dodge has sure is handy when merging on the freeway or passing a slow driver. i will never buy a dodge but when i am ready to get a new truck in a couple of years i hope ford has a little more to offer. to me ford has a problem with making a good product and then never trying to improve it.

btw the new dodge cumming diesel will crank out 555 ft lbs of torque at 1,400 rpm and 305 h.p @ 2,900.

Maybe Ford doesn't have the most powerful engines. Yes, I think that sucks too. We stand behing the Ford trucks like nobodies buisness. It would be nice if Ford could give us something more to cheer about.
On the other hand, we need to look closer at the numbers to get the real picture. I have not looked at all the numbers so I don't know. I have seen the Chevy Trailblaizer has 270hp out of the inline 6. Yes that is 270hp, at 6000rpm. Tell me, how many people are going to get that 270hp out of that SUV? I believe max tq in that thing is at something like 4825rpm. That's up there. If this is the way chevy sells there stuff, than I think people need to take a good look at what they are getting.
I can accept that companies other than Ford are capable of producing powerful engines. The numbers have increased kind of rapidly for chevy and dodge. The numbers are what they compare to Ford trucks. They don't say where they were able to achive the numbers.
If some one has some time to kill, it would be nice to know where the hp and tq is on the chevy and dodge.
My solution to this. I'm going to bolt on another 100hp on my 4.6.

Not only are they falling behind in the hp and torque, but the difference is even larger when you consider the lack of gear ratio options. The 5.4 with 275 tires needs 3.73s or 4.10s to compete with GM and Dodge. I was seriously considering a GMC 2500HD with 6.0 and 4.10 - the thing has gobs of power. But, I came to my senses and decided the ultra cheap and flimsy interior just isn't worth it. Waiting on a redesigned F150 with more power, better gears, and hopefully a larger SuperCab (not Screw size, I want a 6.5 bed!).

Universal Supercharged5.4

A few days ago I read in one of the truckin mags that Ford will be offering a supercharged 5.4 in all F-150s. This is supposed to happen in the next two years. I guess it's a little more than rumor cuz is was printed in a national mag, but, we'll have to wait and see if it comes to pass. Imagine, a supercharger in that beat-up F-150 next to you on the road hauling lawn mowers and pulling a trailer...could happen.

I'd take a wait and see approach to the new 5.7 from Dodge. #1 - It isn't offered yet and there still is no information as to when it will be availible in the 1/2 ton market. Rumors right now have a very limited number of these engines appearing in the 1/2 tons when they come out. IMO, Dodge made a big mistake in not having the 5.7 ready with the new body style - not that the 5.9 is a bad engine, just a bit outdated by the competition.
#2 - I wouldn't be looking to the new dodge for fuel mileage. The 4.7 has tended to be a fairly thirsty engine also, so I wouldn't be looking for any miracles in that department either.
#3 - Lets see where the new 3 valve 5.4's end up. They aren't here yet either.

My truck has taller tires, higher gears, and less horsepower than the Z71, but I have yet to see one that will blow my doors off from a dead stop. I wouldn't trade my 2400 rpm peak torque for 30 more horsepower at 5000 rpm because my truck rarely sees 5000 rpm. I can fill my truck with hunting gear, fill the trailer full of bird dogs, and cruise the Interstate at 80 mph without having to worry about the Tow/Haul tranny switch to keep it from hunting gears. If your looking for a high revving grocery getter that is snappy around town and will cruise the highways with an empty bed, than the Chevy 5.3 and the Dodge 4.7 are perfect. If you want a truck that can pull your boat or haul a load of firewood, then the 5.4 is hard to beat.

I'm anxious to see the new Dodge 5.7 Hemi. I wonder what a Superchip that would let it rev higher would gain?

Cummins being bought by Ford?

Where did you get this info?

I live in Columbus, Indiana, where Cummins is headquarted, and I haven't heard one peep about Cummins being bought out - and ANY Cummins news is big news in this town.

Not to mention Ford buys their diesels from International.

Question 36fan:

Don't quote me on this, as I've only heard this from my father, but I guess Ford has owned Cummins for some time. There is some "law" out there that prevents Ford from putting them in Ford trucks or something. That's why Ford used the Power Stroke.

Kinda makes sense. Not too long ago, Mark Martin was sponserd by Cummins (not the "hood" sponser, but a "rear panel" sponser) and he drove a Ford. Don't know if they still sponser him. Did notice he's not flying the Viagra name anymore???

Just more speculation to throw in the pot!

And the new Ford diesel will produce 350 HP and 600 Pounds of torque what is your point?

And I pull a 32 foot cattle trailer almost every day loaded to capcity, 300 HP does squat for me if its only making 4 pounds of torque at 80 thousand RPM's, go get what you want to get. I dont have a truck for racing or hauling *** on the free way, I use it to work.

It sounds like you're father got his sources mixed up. Cummins is a publicly held corporation, but the majority is still owned by the Irwin's - the family that started the business I believe as a manufacture of tire air pumps. Last year their was talk that the company was prime for a buyout, either a sell out or hostile takeover, but it never happened. Ford has gone a buying binge in the last few years (Land Rover, Volvo, Jaguar, Astin Martin) but Cummins wasn't one of them.

Cummins was an associate sponsor of Mark Martin, but I beleive dropped him the same time Valvoline did. Jack Roush was wanting too much money.

I have a 99 Off Road w/ a 5.4L. My truck out pulls my buddy 02 Silverado w/ a 5.3 and 3.73s all day long. His truck is constantly downshifting because it cant pull overdrive w/ 2000 to 3000 lbs. behind it.
Flat ground is the only time he can hold a gear. Im surprized it dosen't have tranny falure.
