Dodge is coming out with its first Hemi engine in thirty years. It's a 5.7 liter V8 that produces 345 hp and 365 ft-lbs of torque. It's going to be installed in their 2500 and 3500 Ram trucks.

Thumbs up 36fan:

I figured as much. I tell him that all the time!

He also drives a Dodge with the 24 valve Cummins........ So there you go...............

Actually, the Cummins is an awesome engine. Just too bad they put them in a Dodge!

swofford. i think that the needs of some one who pulls a 32 ft trailer daily might be just a little different than the average truck buyer. i have no dought that any of the v-8 offered by ford dodge or chevy will pull the average camper, boat or jet ski with no problem. in texas owning a 1 ton dually with a diesel is a status symbol and most of the people with them dont haul a thing. i wonder what people did 20 years ago before we have 500 plus ft pounds of torque offered?

People get hung up on numbers. The current 5.4 makes 300 lb ft or more over a wider range than the 5.3 does. With 3 valve heads it will increase the rev range upward and the HP will go up. Keep in mind though that the low end will most likely remain just as strong as it is now.

As for the proposed Hemi, the numbers don't add up. Of all the articles I've seen the torque ratings don't equate to the HP they are claiming, so one or the other is screwed up.

Dodge is now owned by the Germans (Daimhler-Chrysler) and will be running Mercedes-Benz diesels soon. The Cummins will be an option.

My measley 5.4's 260 horsepower is enough to do what I ask of it. If you need more than 260 HP and 350 ft/lbs of torque in a 1/2 ton pickup then you are playing a dangerous game.

Considering the F Series is the number one selling truck now for what 24 years? Im guessing they bought a Ford and hauled whatever they needed to with no problems. They've always offered the strongest engines for working. And as for a Status symbol in Texas, Im from Texas, Blackwell, POP 220. I grew up on my family's ranch and every single diesel pickup is a work truck. What they do in a big city where the only form of cattle they see is on a Chik-Fil-A sign is another matter all together.

Cummins bought by Ford?

Ford has gone a buying binge in the last few years (Land Rover, Volvo, Jaguar, Astin Martin) but Cummins wasn't one of them.
Hey are you pretty sure about that? I had heard by a friend of mine that Ford did by Cummins here in the last year or so, and that Dodge would not buy there diesels from Ford so they planned to finish out the contracts and then go to the Mercedes type diesel... Is that all BS?

Question

Still no confirmation on "who" owns Cummins, but this Press Release from Cummins makes it sound like Dodge is going to stick with them thru 2003. Maybe that's when the current contract ends????

Cummins Press Release

swofford.. we did you see the 350 h.p. and 600 ft lbs of torque from the new 6.0 liter? everything i have seen is saying 305 hp and 550 ft lbs of torque @ 2000 rpm.
i think the truck market is so different now than it was 10 years ago. i think this is why every one is offering a h/d series for the people who actually use a truck and i think the light duty truck is made more and more to appeal to the people who basically like the idea of driving a truck and to pull the occasional jet ski or load of sand. i think over the next ten years the light duty truck will become more car like.

when dodge start maketing the new hemi with 85 more hp than the ford, the name "hemi" and 85 hp will get people attention.

i like my ford truck for the ride, looks and the suprcrew option but i would be lying if i said i wouldnt like more power. i guess i am the only one.

The word Hemi has already caught alot of peoples attention. It has has my full attention and if ford doesn't plan on doing something to keep up, I just might become a traitor (puts flame suite on).It would be a tough call ........and its one that I will have to make (my lease expires in may of 03)

The your looking at the wrong material or out dated. 6.0 litre will produce 350 HP and 600 Pounds of torque once again making the Ford truck the most powerful Diesel you can get your hands on in a small truck.

Im amazed how much people get caught up on the word Hemi, its not going to be anything even close to the old Hemi. Its just a combustion chamber design. Nissan had "Hemi" 4 cylinders on their pickups (old carbed Z24 motor about 100hp). Maybe ford should make a motor based off the Triton line and call it BOSS, people will jump all over that name too.

As far as what HP/ TQ ratings are concerned, I usually dont pay much mind till the car actually hits the streets. Ive seen over so many years where they say one rating or this car will have that motor but it finally comes down to it, it comes out with 50hp less then they were promising and sometimes not even the motor they were promising.

PS, where is my V8 S10 I have being promised for since 1988 from GM.
