5.4 enough?
350 hp and 600 ft./lbs of tourque is in the tonka show truck - alot of people feel that all that power will not make it to the production truck and that it will be closer to around 310 - 350 and tourque will be around 550 area aswell
BTW ford already has the most powerfull diesel - based on tourque. chev bases theirs on horsepower but as like with the tritons ford beats them in tourque 525 ft.lbs in 02 powerstroke
Hemi - ever look at an escorts cyl heads, most people wouldn't associate hemi with an escort, but if it works to sell trucks then why not, trition, powerstroke, duramax, vortech, magnum now hemi

That is such BS
Look at the March 02 issue of Motor Trend, the King Ranch ate up the 1500 HD and everything else.
How can they say Ford is obsolete, the truck has not been changed much in the last 5 1/2 yrs. but look at it. It still has the best styling and the interior is way better than the Dodge and Chevy.
Im sure that 4.8 L out pulled the 5.4L when in the back of the Motor Trend artical the Ford was the quicker than the 6.0L
O yea, it didn't mention in the car and driver what the rear ends where did they.

if chevy offers a 3.73 and ford does not is that a good excuse? do you think there is a big differnce between a 3.55 and a 3.73, While i dont no the answer, are the transmissions geared the same?
the dodge lagged alittle behind with 240 h.p., but it weighed 300 lbs more, what do you think the 345 h.p. hemi will do?

not all chevies hunt for the right gear. The tranny is geared for higher rpm use so yes the chevies like to rev. you can brag all day long about torque being king but unless the engine can do work the torque arguement is stupid. Horsepower is torque over time and the lower the torque is the less work it will do. If any of you took the time to look you would see there is not some phenominal H.P. gap at the lower rpm's between the Chevy 5.3 and the Ford 5.4. Yes, the 5.4 has great lowend torque. That, coupled with the gearing of the Ford tranny and rear end keeps the engine in the lower rpm range. Chevies are still faster, and can tow everything a Ford can. Yes the Chevy will rev higher, it was designed to. Many Chevy owners who have had a problem with the gear hunting have had a pcm reflash and the situation was corrected. Y'all just can't stand it that an engine rated with lower torque at a higher rpm can whip you on and off the track. Hell, my weak '99 (only 315 lb/ft TQ) has never had a problem taking out every ford that wanted to play when it was bone stock.
Off the line i'm ahead and just keep on pulling ahead.
P.S. This is where everyone starts to whine 'but mine has more torque than yours' and then I ask 'then why am I always in front of you?'
Oh Yeh, dont' forget to whine about those gears

OK
My 5.4L out pull my buddys 5.3L all day long. With 1500 lb. trailer that 02 Silverado cant pull overdrive up any kind of slope w/ out a kick down.
I pull 2 sleds the whole way to the hills with out any major bog in overdrive.
He has 3.73's
And in a drag, I dont know whos driving the Fords, but I run his Chevy by 5 feet everytime.
I dont think my truck being a Reg cab, short box plays much of a effect.
Unless my 5.4L is blessed
Besides, any one who owns a Chevy knows the trucks a cheap, wheels are small and ugly, interior really is crap, most colors make the truck look cheaper.
Exhaust's wear out after 15,000 miles, you can own a 2002 and it still looks like a 89.
If they don't agree thier lying.

**** 4,
I guess I could call YOU a liar but then I would have to stoop to your level.
Swofford,
Your 17+ second diesel isn't even worth my time. (wouldn't be very fair if you were running propane now would it
)
I would have a hard time getting to either of your states but if you want to meet somewhere I can take you both to school
(obviously towing against an F250/350 diesel would not be fair but I will match up with the 5.4, no problem)

My dad has one of those weak 99 Chevys with the 5.3L His doesnt have a hard time finding the right gear with the "Tow/HAUL" activated, what a joke. I have driven the truck once, and it didnt impress me at all. Everytime he cranks it up, you can here the "HEARTBEAT OF AMERICA" coming from under the hood. Man that thing sounds like its about to blow up. And its only got 49000 miles on it. I guess that this is what you get when you have an engine that relies on high revs to make power!!!

The new Hemi seeems like a interesting engine. I have spent over a month in the Saltillo, MX plant where it is (will be) made. My company wrties software that tests the engine after assembly. It is a high end modern engine by many respects. It has a girdled ladder type lower end. Cracked cast con rods, and of course a HEMI head design. Suprisingly it is a single cam in block design. This is not new news if you are into reading automotive magazines.
They have a few tricks to help with the MPG problem too. I can't say much, but the statement "Chrysler will be able to deactivate cylinders on its new 5.7L Hemi V-8" at the site

is interesting ...

The statement that a Gen I 5.3L will take Fords all day long is absourd. I have a "weak" 1998 5.4L and I have yet to be humiliated by anything short of a Lightning. I've raced Supercharged Hondas (real joke, no matter what kind of truck you're driving) Dodge Rams (Dogs) and Chevy Silverados (not bad competition, but unless you're chipped, get used to my taillights). Swofford's Diesel would eat you alive (these things run about a low 17 pass stock, auto) and with his mods, he'd rape your truck. So do us all a favor and take your useless babble to a chevy site. Then maybe you can brag about your failing transmissions and cheap plastic dash trim.

Towing w/ 5.4
I am getting a new vehicle sometime before summer. I currently have a 1999 Suburban w/ the 5.7 Votec. I like to vacation about 400 miles away and take long weekends. I usually end up packing the entire truck, sometimes even packing stuff in the boat. The boat and trailer weigh 5,040 lbs. The drive just isn't relaxing. Just about the time I finally find a agreeable speed for the cruise and sit back, the truck will start its downshifting and screaming. I swear its gonna blow up one of these times.
I am considering an F150 Super Crew with the 5.4. Does anyone know if this rig will be an improvement? I am sorta hoping that someone else out there happens to pull a similar sized boat and can tell me their experiences. Because it is 400 miles, I do like to push it just as fast as I can without getting a ticket - speed limit is 65 most of the way.
I have the fustrating feeling that the best truck in terms of power would be the 6.0 Liter Chevy. I won't bore you with the list of problems I have had with my Suburban but it certainly is enough to make me think twice before buying another one. Hell, my girlfriend's dad used to be a Chevy mechanic. He was asking me I hadn't considering qualifying for the lemon law. I told him no, its just the way the new ones are these days. Built cheap.
I am also considring a SuperDuty but I am not excited about having to buy a V10 or pay the price of a diesel. The main reason I would go with the SuperDuty is for heavier frame and driveline(Yes, I am burned out on getting alignments and replacing U-joints!)

With a SuperCrew, you should have no problem in towing the trailer, but really if you're gonna tow it 400+ miles frequently, you might want to invest in either 4:10 gears or the SuperDuty. The SuperDuty would be the best route to go because of the stronger frame and springs, and it wouldn't cost you much more than the SuperCrew. Good luck with whatever you do.
