Thumbs up LOSE YOUR FAN ROAR WITH A SHIFTPLUS!!

I recently reinstalled my shiftplus after taking out a perf. chip(don't ask, please)
and the first gear fan roar went away almost entirely. The first gear acceleration
was also greatly improved! part of this could be the computer resetting, but it also stopped the roar permanently the first time it was installed. They only cost
about 35 to 40 dollars and really make a difference for those of us who are presently chipless. B&M could charge alot
more for these but they don't, big thumbs
to B&M!!

Question

I'm somewhat of a newbie to all of these mods, so I've got to ask. What in the world is a shiftplus? Next, what is it good for? Thanks.

Cool

Well, I'm glad you asked,lol Actually it's
a small controller box that you can mount
almost anywhere in the cab. you hook it up to two wires in the comp. plug behind
the battery,it's really almost too easy to install one. What it does is change the
shift firmness of your trans(not sure if it
raises them), but it does make a world of
difference when you need to accelerate
more than normal. you can switch between three different levels:stock/level
1/level 2. The fact that it stops the first gear fan roar is just a happy coincidence.
I would recommend it to anyone who's
sick of the sluggish 1st gear perf. and the
sloppy shifting the AODE is famous for..
Enjoy,,,,,98

Question

Hey 98 screamer,
Thanks for the info on the Shift Plus! I just
received mine and I'm a little confused about the directions. I have a 4R70W tranny
and the directions are for an E40D. I called
B & M and they said it will be the same for
both. Hope they're right. Can yo offer me any
tricks on the install or is it as e-z as they
say. It looks the ECM part will be a very tight fit. Any insight, please take a minute
and let me know. I would really appreciate it!
Thanks,
OHC

Hey, where did you guys get your B&M Shiftplus and about how much was it? And would it work with a chip, or is it one or the other? Also what is the difference in the three settings it has, and how long does it take to respond to the change? Sorry for so many questions, but I would really like to get rid of that annoying fan roar. Thanks in advance.

I don't know about the 4R70, mine was fairly simple. On mine all I had to do was
take off the battery cover, after undoing the
terminals of course. After that it was fairly
easy to reach the ecm connecter behind
the bat. with a 10 mil. socket. A 1/4 inch
ratchet with a long socket makes it a lot
easier in the tight space. I took the computer completely out to drill a 3/16"
hole in the firewall bet. the comp. and the
cowl side. (metal part of the kick panel)
I used a small stiff wire to pull the shiftplus wire through from the firewall side. wrap it lengthwise to minimize the
trouble of snagging on the small dia. hole. The ecm connector should be numbered on one side or the other, for each row(like 1-30,30-60,,,not sure of the actual numbering of the rows) It's a little tedious counting the pin holes on the connector but it's not hard. as far the small box between the end of the wire and the control switch I taped it to the bottom of the a/c box with gaffers tape(a glorified version of duct tape) and I routed
the wire behind the black plastic cover under the dash. I used some high temp, high strength velcro type matierial.
from Radio shack. You'll know it by the picture of a CB mounted on top of a dash-
board(like anyone would be that dumb)
sorry, got ahead of myself. This is the stuff I used to mount the switch to the lower dash above the black piece. everthing else seemed to let go after a week or so in the heat. As for using it with a chip,Mike from Perf. Products advised against it . I think he knows more
than me about this sort of thing.
He also told me that the shiftplus may
burn out the shift solienoids because it
works by spiking the voltage to them. I am
taking mine out when my chip goes in,so
if anyone wants it (cheap) let me know and I'll sell it for about $15. I even have the instructions for it.

All I can come up with is that the truck accelerates faster through first gear where the fan does the roaring so it's not as noticeable. I also noticed the roaring
was much worse if I forgot to turn the O/D
off after exiting the freeway

How in the world does a Electronic Device quiet a mechnical Fan? I can only see that the Fan noise is directly related to engine Rpm, the computer doesnt engage and disengage the Fan clutch

Red face

I don't know,,,,I do think it has something
to do with engine speed. The engine rpm
rising faster, maybe? I am going to take it
out when my chip comes on Monday .
In other words,I give up. I don't how it does it but it works on mine.

Question

I can see no relation between the shiftplus and the fan roar. The engine probably speeds up at the same rate of rpm in the same gear with or without the shiftplus, it is only the actual shift that is changed. This is almost the same as saying it also prevents flat tires since you probably don't have a flat. I am sure there are far smarter people on this board, someone please help me understand this.
