Engine Replacement Questions??

Took my 99 F-150 5.4 w/ 30,000 miles in today because of head gasket oil leak on the passenger side. Called the dealership to check on the status of repair and advisor said they were going to replace my engine because of piston slap and the head gasket leak. I felt sure I had the oil leak but did'nt think I had piston slap.Once they heard the piston slap they did'nt even check for a bad gasket or the casting flaw.He said he ordered a long block for replacement, I guess a FQR engine. My question is for those who have had their's replaced have you had futher problems and are these new engines or remanufactured? Also what kind of warranty comes with these engines?Did the techs scratch up the hood or fenders when replacing the engine? Thanks in advance for the post. Ken

I've had my FQR for a year now, they did a really good job installing it. No dings or scratches whatsoever. Engine was stronger than original and gets better mileage. HOWEVER, I currently have a burning rubber smell that they tell me is just "dirt", but it smells a lot like when the original had the head gasket leak. Warranty on the FQR is 12/12 from install date, which happened to end the same time as my original 36/36.

97 f150 4.6 remanufactured

Replacing my engine due to corrosion into cyl#4 . Buying a remanufactured block and replacing all water channel components topside. Also, trans rebuild if necessary.
I'll log in from time to time to update trials & tribulations.

Piston slap while not ideal usually isn't a bad thing, I don't see it on its own warrenting a rebuilt engine. The fact that you didn't notice it makes me suspicious of your shop, most dealers wouldn't even warrentee it new because they didn't feel it was a problem.

Another thing to keep in mind is to keep up with flushing the coolant, it will build up an electrical charge and actually eat the aluminum heads through electrolysis.
