what is the easiest way to get at the oil filter on a 1999 f-150? it looks buried in there. thank you

I have to crank the wheel all the way to the right so the filter will clear the steering linkage! It's a pain in the butt getting the filter off and always makes a mess! There have been several posts about poking a hole in the filter to drain it first and using folded cardboard to channel the oil away from the crossmember under the engine! I've not tried either, but may at my next oil change! Good luck!

Hey it's painless if you break it loose with a strap wrench and then put a plastic bag around it and then unscrew it. NO MESS! p.s. I have a 4x4 and it does take two hands to guide it out.

 

I have a 4x2 and I also have to crank the wheel to the right. It still requires a little work to guide the old filter out..but not that big of a deal.

HI!... I never have a problem changing my oil filter. I just turn the wheels to the right and use a filter wrench to break the filter loose. My truck came from the factory with a sheet metal drain sheild directly under the filter on top of the cross member. I drain my oil first and then put the oil pan under the sheild and it all runs into the pan when I loosen my filter. After you install the new filter just take a shop rag and wipe the sheild and your done. Clean and simple!LOL!

I can't believe Ford changes the oil filter location so often. Mine is right next to the drain plug hanging vertically. It's Right there, no obstructions, just turn it off and on!
