open engine coil. Where is my spark hexnut

I'm trying to change my engine coils and spark plugs. Why is my spark plug hex nut missing. Dealership was the last group to work on plugs.

What are you working on? We can't see your engine or truck through the Internet.

Sorry. I'm freaking out. It's a 2005 F-150 5.4. When I removed the engine coil, I didn't see the hex bolt on the spark plug.

Sometimes debris gets in the sparkplug wells and has to be cleaned out.

Were you able to change the other 7 plugs without breaking any?

Use a mirror and light to look down in the well. You may need a scribe and a vacuum and/or air pressure to clean it out. There's a thread here somewhere where someone took a length of copper tubing with diameter just larger than the hex and cut a couple slots in the end, then put it down in the well and turned it while pushing down to loosen all the crud.

Thanks for all the help. that looks like some type of sleeve onto of the spark plug. i will get a vacuum and compressed air to clean that thing out. I was able to change all the engine coils. How do i remove the spark plug on the passenger side in the rear. Do I need to remove the computer. It was rough changing that engine coil and I don't see how I can get a spark socket into that well.

Couldn't change any because they all the plug look like this one in the picture. Now that I'm am able to look at the picture, that looks like some type of sleeve sitting on top of the spark plug.

I would advise you to take it in to a shop that is experienced in changing 5.4 3 valve spark plugs. Those are 2 piece plugs that stick and break when you try to remove them. It's not at all like the old school plugs.

What brand coils did you use?

I installed the Accel brand coils.

Would you suggest that I install another brand?

Yes, but you need to get the plugs taken care of first. The factory coils seldom go bad.

The only proven reliable coils are Motorcraft, Denso, or Delphi.
