Amsoil
does this work?? Sorry I posted then looked it wasn't there, then I did it again, still wasn't there. I guess I was caught up in the middle of the upgrade thing.

This is certainly a good read fellas. Until a very few weeks ago I was a "buy it cheap and change it often guy". Then I just had to go out and fill er up with synthetic and see for myself. Maybe it was psychological but I swear that the little 4.2 is a bit quieter and smoother, not to mention that at 3/4ths I had gone 120 miles of combined driving. I dont remember doing that before. I'm sure the benefit of the synthetic will be BIG. Guys I work with (at Kodak) say its a waste of money. I replied "Bite Me". If there were two identical used vehicles for sale, one had been on "Dino" oil, and the other on "synthetic", I kinda bet I know which would get all the votes.
As I've read many of you mention, its the right thing to do and certainly one of the cheapoest insurence policies you will ever hold.
Also, I just popped open a Genesse beer. Eat your hearts out!!

I have a 4.2 V6 and I also noticed it was ALOT quieter with Mobil 1. I will probably go to the Amsoil 25,000/1year oil when my warranty is up in May.

wtd,
You were asking about royal purple, here is an article taken out of Fast Fours and Rotaries (FFR) (July 1998), an Australian performance car jounal. http://www.guarding-our-earth.com/amsoil/fastfour.shtml
I can not atest to the validity of the data, but is mostly FYI. I also realize that it is another amsoil site, but it does list the magazine that the information came out of.

Mike,
Thank you for clarifying the 25,000 OR 1 year change intercal. I believe it's the first time both were posted together.
Hey, don't cancel your URL for Amsoil. I am interested and have visited several times but it did not give me the retail prices for Amsoil so I left. I believe in the product too but maybe not for my driving habits.

msparks,
When Mobil 1 first came out they also claimed 25,000 mile oil changes but have backed off from that claim because they say they don't want to go against manufacturers recommendations. Surely Mobil 1's additive package has gotten better since it first came out, not worse.

I believe that Amsoil does make good lubricants. However, one thing that does make me wonder about their testing is the fact that they never test against Redline, or at least they never publish the results. This even though they do show test results against the other synthetic oil companies. Makes you wonder if perhaps the Redline/Amsoil results were not favorable to Amsoil. Also, does anyone know if Amsoil is in any way a part of Amway.

wtd,
You are showing your age if you remember Mob 1's 25k drain. This is true, they pulled it off the shelves because no one would buy it. It doesn't sell its self. The weren't making enough money and put a cheaper additive package, the sold it for 3,000 drain intervals. I have heard they are again working on an extended drain, similiar to the Amsoil Series 2,000.
As far as Mobil ones additive package being worse, or better. You have to look at it this way. Why would you spend extra money for an additive package design to go 25,000 miles when people are changing their oil at 3,000 miles? I'm sure their additive package has changed with the times but it is still only designed to last (in my opinion 10,000 miles max)
Amsoil did the same exact thing--They have come out with a cheaper oil that has an additive package similiar to Mobil 1. It is design to go 7,500 miles between drains. The are breaking into the Fast Lube Market.
Here is the link for that: http://www.amsoil.com/products/xlf.html
Would I say that their additive package is worse? No not worse just design to do a different thing is all.
-Ron Kaltenbach,
I belive that either Mob 1 or Amsoil are the top two oils I would choose. Redline is a good oil but mainly for racing applications. There is an oil analysis on Rediline on the same web site that I gave above, I realize that that It was done by Oil Analyzers Inc, a subsidary of Amsoil, but the numbers speak the truth. And it does make one wonder-at least try to find out more information before I would purchase this oil. Here is the link
http://www.guarding-our-earth.com/amsoil/red_line.shtml
I'm not bashing Redline, but just point out some numbers. You must do some research on your own to find the truth, I know their are a lot of folk on here and the Ford Diesel Site that use Redline and I have heard no complaints--I have heard nothing bad about them personally, and even recommended Redlines ATF before.
Amsoil/Amway,
Here is the history on Amsoil- http://www2.vivid.net/~vlentz/history.html
Amway was started by 2 now billionaires, it works by you getting started in the business and purchasing for yourself, then you get others to purchase for themselves,
Where as Amsoil, it is more like a franchise, where you are your own boss. You sell the products in whatever maket you desire be it catalogs, Commercial, Retail on the shelf and personal retail.

Ok guys,
I have been critical of long 1 year oil changes in the past for my driving habits. And I have perused the Amsoil site on more than one occasion and have bantered with Mike Sparks here more than once too.
The Amsoil site has much content and it takes a little time to find it all but it's there just the same.
BUT, I have learned a lot more accessing the Amsoil site recently, and from Mike Sparks privately and maybe it has cured some of my ignorance. Amsoil does make a more suitable oil for my driving habits, the "7500"/6 month series and it is not too cost prohibitive for me. I was also concerned about shipping costs and learned Amsoil has many warehouse locations, one which is very close to me in Lancaster, Pa which will save in this area too. No one wants to buy a product on the edge of cost effectivesness only to have it consumed by shipping costs.
So, I am about to make a "trial run" with Amsoil 7500 series synthetic oil 5w-30 and maybe a couple of filters too. How will I be able tell a difference using Amsoil? Well, to tell the truth I don't know but it won't be a step backwards in any case from Mobil 1.
Since Mobil and/or its retailers seem to keep raising their prices for Mobil 1, and Mobil 1 "on sale" prices are getting to be few and far between, Amsoil's prices are getting a little more competitive and may worth a trial for me.
Am I plugging Amsoil and Mike Sparks? Not in particular but I am just rationalizing my decision to give Amsoil a try.

MSPARKS since you post a direct link to your product for FREE, why don't you or the corporation advertise on this site? You may convience some to make the switch. I am coming up on 3000mi. and considering what synth. oil to use, Amsoil is in the running.

MSparks - Redline make a separate line of oils for racing applications and for the street. They warn against using their racing oils on the street. I live in the Southern California desert and in the summer I drive my vehicles hard in 100 degree temps and frequently at similar speeds. I've used Redline for about 12 years in 3 Ford 4X4s, an Rx-7 Turbo, a Mustang Cobra and a Mazda Miata. Never a problem and when Rx-7 was broadsided and totaled at 136,000 miles, no apparent wear in differential, trans or motor upon teardown. So, yes I have some serious questions about this groups testing methods. If you believe their results, then Redline would be less effective than a dino oil. Anyone that has used Redline products in a racing application or on the street for any length of time knows something smells funny here. What is really needed is independent testing and not testing by someone marketing the product.

msparks,
I'm not that old, only 32 but I did alot of research on synthetic oils when I decided to use it in my 93 S-10 4x4 and read about Mobil's 25,000 claim. The thing that worries me about extended drain intervals is that synthetic oils still get the same amount of contaminates that regular dino oil gets which help contribute to engine wear. The other thing is that no vehicle manufacturer that I know of endorses extended drain intervals and most people are not going to risk warrenty coverage problems by extending oil changes. You say that the manufacturer would never know how long you kept the oil in but on a warrenty issue they can require you to show proof of how often you changed the oil. I'm really not sure why Amsoil felt the need to come out with their XL-7500 series oil. For only a .30 cent difference in price compared to their regular synthetic I would rather go with the better stuff and just change it more often if I felt the need. I would try Amsoil if I thought I could get it at a decent price but I figured that by the time I had it shipped to my house it would cost almost $7.00 dollars a quart. How much would it cost a quart if I became a dealer and could buy it at wholesale?
