Exclamation P0022 Error Code Help?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 2008 F150 4x4 Super Crew 5.4L Triton w/ 45k miles and am having some issues.

I changed the oil, filter and air filter this weekend and as usual ran the truck for about 10 minutes to check for leaks which there were none. After driving on the highway I stopped at a toll booth and the RPMs dropped and the truck shook. I immediately pulled over and checked the oil level etc which was still normal. Fearing that I had not put the proper oil in I changed it again and still had the same issue. I got home, disconnected the battery for a few hours and fired it back up. Ran fine for about 20 minutes but rough at low RPM’s or when I stop. Placing it in neutral and briefly increasing the RPM’s seems to clear it up for a moment. The Check Engine light finally came on and the Error code is:

P0022 Intake cam timing on bank 2 over retarded
Last night I replaced the cam position sensor on bank 2 and the truck is doing the same thing. What else am I missing here?

Confirm that you changed the sensor on the driver's side - that's Bank 2.

I'm guessing that the driver's side cam phaser may be stuck or inoperative - it runs on oil pressure and it has a screen that may be plugged up. Any possibility the engine is sludged up due to improper maintenance? What exact oil and filter are you using?

Valvoline 5w20 synthetic and a Fram filter. Yes, I changed the position sensor on the drivers side (Bank 2). I ordered another VCT from Ford today and will pick up this evening. If that doesn't work, what is my next step?

Getting rid of the fram oil filter and getting a motorcraft one.....maybe that will help a little

Edit get a VCT solenoid that could be the problem....

What is the secret for removing the valve cover? Plugs are out all cables are removed, removed the power steering reservoir bracket (That was genius attaching it to a header bolt... not)

Um....you don't need to remove the valve cover to get the VCT out.....

So if im understanding this correctly....the 08 3v head when it got revised for the better plugs. The VCT also was changed on how its installed and are the part numbers the same from 07 to 08?

I thought all 3v heads were the same as far as, compononents the only revision was the plugs.....

The seal on the earlier models is bigger.

Now, what is holding up the cover?

Two dabs of RTV at the front of the cam cover right where the front cover cam cover and cyl head meet. Its just under the cover at the gasket. The RTV seals the joint from oil seepage and will hold the cover down making it hard to remove. Use a sharp narrow putty knife to cut through the RTV.
