2008 fx2 5.4 cold start exhaust sounds like a diesel
does anyone else here with a 2008 f150 5.4 24 valve notice that for the first 10 seconds or so of cold start ( raised rpm), the exhaust sounds liek a clatter/ gargle clap? then "chugs" down to normal? my truck has done this since day 1 and i now have 51xxx miles on it but am wonderign if its normal or ive been driving with whacked phasers or vgts or whatever else could be bad... seriously, if your truck is cold right now, go start it and listen to the exhaust tip, see if it sounds different for the first 10 -15 seconds like its an old really cammed engine and then it goes normal...
am i crazy?

Startup rattle is from the timing chain tensioner bleed off, losing the oil pressure.
I guarantee you premature engine failure if you don't use the Ford recommended viscosity oil and filter, not to mention Ford won't warranty any engine damage caused by using the wrong oil viscosity. The VCT system on these 5.4 3v trucks is engineered to use 5w20 oil. But if you're smarter than the Ford engineers....

I respect stealths experiance and knowledge so my above post was not meant in disrespect . However we just went through part of this on another thread in regards to oil weight ( within reason), brands of filters, etc. and claims that it will put the truck warranty at risk so thats what I am referring too with my blunt answer. Also to guarantee that an engine will experiance premature failure if these certain Ford "recommended" products are not used is just adding more confusion for people who may be visiting this site looking for factual information. These claims are just not valid. Sorry

i have owned 5 f150s..im more of a going by whats proven in real world conditions. im no ford certified tech nor an ford engineer. the only parts i know that work are oem parts compared to pep boys or autozones knockoffs. mc oil and filter are not gonna make your truck last any longer just because its recommended..no disrespect to any one here on the thread..we all have our own opinion..ive ran 300,000 miles plus on a 85 f150 5.0 302 f.i. and it still lives strong with oem componets but never used mc oil in it ever.
Better start studying the differences between a modular motor and a push rod one.
