cold start knock

so i changed the oil filter to Motorcraft, and switched to motorcraft synthetic blend.... the knock isnt as bad its alot quieter and only for like a one second increment... do yall think the filter has caused permanent damage. i mean it a 100% improvement and i can hardly hear anything now but im picky and want my truck to run perfect... what do yall think?

how long has this knocking been occurring? it is possible that over time there has been some permanent damage. however some engines just make a bit of noise when they start...it's possible this little bit of noise has always been there but now you're really listening for it. after an oil change you're definitely going to get a little noise on the first start so that may have been what you heard? i'd say give it a few days and see how it works out. you've definitely got a good combo with the motorcraft oil/filter there, so you should have prevented any future damage from ocurring.

well hopefully it improves. any other driveability issues? if not i say drive it til it blows. it doesn't sound like the noise is that bad anymore so i think you have plenty of life left in that engine. i've had trucks come in the shop that have been subjected to much worse than what you're describing and they just keep on going. as finicky as these engines are, they really are pretty durable and can take a lot of crap.

Mine does the same thing. Stick with the MotorCraft oil and filter, the blend gives me 5k oil change intervals as opposed to non-synthetic oil which I could tell it needed to be changed every 3k.

It will save you a ton of cash in the long run.

NEITHER.

5/20 is the preferred grade. You may use 0/20, 0/30, 5/20, or 5/30. Nothing heavier.

A mechanic said that ? Not a Ford Tech, right ? = Before the 1998 model year Fords went into production, ALL gaskets, even transmissions were updated to handle a much more raw formulation of synthetic. Further testing continued for years and since, Synthetic base formulations have changed along with gaskets.

So, if you have a damaged gasket today, anything will find it, - Synthetics will have nothing to do with it. At one time, yes,- that statement may have and did hold water -"old school", but not with your generation Ford product. It's been said that pre-98 models can handle today's synthetic formulations, -NO leak promotion due to said formulation modification.

Information via Ford engineer can be found @ tccoa
