first off the filter is not the problem...fram, motorcraft, wix...whatever it is they come with an anti-drain-back valve. The problem with your motor is either the timing chain/gears/tensioner or cam phasers.

- You can't be for real... Nooo, no one can be that ignorant about the ADB valve issues. It's just about impossible, -as a member of THIS site Right! I suggest you search this , - "Anti drain back valve problems and Fram filters".

Or thro it out there any way you want, it's not a difficult subject..You can scholar with lightning speed. - Well, unless get all over confident with yourself again and freak another historic type answer. That's just = FAIL. Tell you what , search "Orange can of death" , then broaden your mind.

Seriously search, it won't take long. Their bad news for these engines..

Good Luck man

the bass or tenor knock question above was not a facetious remark. it has been my experience that there are knocks of different frequency. if something like this happens to my 01 i'd like to have a reference to start from. thanx for everything.

Wow. I've had a '99 F-150, '02 Taurus, '05 F-150, '06 Explorer, and my current '08 F-150 and had never heard this about Fram. And have used Fram filters with all of them. Never had a motor problem with any of them. But, that being said, I generally trust the opinions of this site so the Fram TG on my truck now is the last one.

Any recommendations on oil? I typically use Pennzoil 5W-20 full synthetic.

It's the orange Frams that are junk - the white ones are okay. Your oil is fine, but you can save money with Motorcraft semi-synthetic.

Yes. You click on the search button , upper right, then click on Advanced Search. Enter your search parameters and you should get plenty of hits.

Its pretty self explanatory if his problem only occurs when the truck sits for a while...and goes away a few seconds after start up. The oil is not being kept up top where it needs to be. The orange fram filters have known issues with faulty ADB vavles.

I just had a friend with an expedition with the same problems. I told him to come over and I would take a listen... A soon as he pulled in here, I saw it...(remote oil filter location) there was a bright glowing orange can behind the bumper. 2 days later he changed it to motorcraft and his problems are now gone, well 99% Even the guy at the lube joint knew about the orange fram filter problems with anti drain back system.

He as a 2v motor, no cam phasers. A cam/timing chain, guides or tensioner would make promenant noise throughout certain rpm ranges. Not just on start up. More than likely to hear it as the rpms climb, peak, then fall.. Right at that moment there is slack in the chain that slaps against the broken guides or back of the timing cover.

The cheap Fram and probably other cheap filters have anti drainback valves made out of cardboard instead of plastic. These tend to collapse which in effect means no valve at all and Ford needs oil to stay on top.

Hard to say. I would change it though. Just for the piece of mind.

What oil do you use. And is yours an 04 5.4L?

I get the same rattle on start

I thought this may be an oil problem. I've taken my truck to the local Red Carpet/carwash lube place since day one. I'm not sure what kind of filter they have been using but I will have to pay attention and maybe hand them a motorcraft when I pull up.... thanks everyone for your imput. This is my first time on here and needed this bit of info.

frams are not automatically going to bad out of the box. many of them last just fine for a normal OCI. however, their anti-drainback valve is poorly designed and when it fails, this is exactly the issue that it causes. if there was a mechanical issue with the engine, it would most likely exhibit the knocking every time it was started. the fact that it only does it after sitting for a couple days suggests that the oil is draining out of the engine and back into the oil pan. the modular ford engines NEED oil in the engine (especially in the heads) immediately on startup. other engines from different manufacturers are more forgiving and can run just fine until proper oil pressure is built up. this is why many people claim that they've never had any problems with fram filters on other vehicles.
