Build project 5.4
Build project 5.4
well my buddy on here Masterbeatty locked up his 5.4 and is going to give it to me when he gets a new motor. i stil have my 4.6 but i want to go threw and rebuild this 5.4 and build it for some power to. i plan on rebuildin pretty much everything depending on what happend to lock it up. he lost an oil pump and then it stoped runnin so im thinkin oil pump and a bearing somewere.
My plans for this motor are Complete rebuild. DOHC *Navi heads* A blower weather it be an Eaton M112 or a wipple or KB. Comp cams somthing with a noticable idle but power band 1,000-5,000. i was thinking about having some headwork done to while im at it.
1. Does anyone know of a good rebuild kit for a 5.4? thats not to pricy but not el chepo?
2. is the DOHC exhuast ports diff then the 2V?
3 .is thre any stroker kit someone has used or would recommend or should i not get one??
4.What cams do you recommend??
5. Also i know ill need to upgrade fuel. what lbs/HR and what brand. Also what fuel pump do you guys recomend??
I am not rushing this project so cost kinda doesnt matter but at the same time i still wanna put it togther and run it. this is pretty much an unlimted build i have no dead line. as it stands right now i have abour 300-400 bucks to put into the motor. no idea what i might get for X-mas so i might have more.
Any and all info would be awesome. Thanks alot guys! going from a 4.6 to a blowen DOHC 5.4 should be a pretty drymic chage eh?

If you want DOHC heads, do it. Go with the manley piston and rod kit. Be sure it has the forged crank, but if it actually locked up, you may need the crank replaced. Who knows what actually happened in there.
awesome that is the best news ive heard in a while. Thanks built woohooo. cant wait to get this rollin. i need to sell some stuff too...
Anyone want some 4.6 heads and stuff??? off a 94!!

I know the blown engine is a no cost to you item, but I think that in the long run you would be farther ahead starting with a Navi engine. Buying every little part to convert a sohc to dohc will get very expensive. My $0.02.

oh darn ill get some manifolds off a DOHC motor cut the flange at the head and weld it to my longtubes.
What all is needed to go from SOHC to DOHC if thats the case i may just sell the SOHC or take it back for scrap. aluminum is still about .25/lbs cast is only .1/lbs

Depending on availability, Eagle rods are great quality and about the same price as manley.
I used Mahle pistons and Eagle rods, Clevite bearings and a new ford forged crank. crank was 360 and Jegs has a line on them too. availiability was a major issue for me with the crank so order that first.
I dont know if you really want to go through the hassle of finding parts for a blown DOHC, but consider the power diff's btwn SOHC/DOHC and a standard PSI and compare the prices.

I don't know what your budget is looking like for this motor but the way I see it you are looking at a minimum $10,000 into the motor alone. I believe the block isn't an NVH block either which likely wont handle the power potential you are looking at with that setup.
If you are looking for nice power out of that motor I would be looking at the paschel (sp?) stroker kit with ported PI heads and custom ground cams. You could still add boost later for a lot cheaper than boosting a 4v.
If you would like a decent daily driver capable I would be looking at 10-10.5:1 compression trick flow heads with custom ground cams 2500-3000 stall converter along with the rest of your bolt ons would make for a nice, reliable, streetable, daily driven truck. I think this is the route I would eventually like to take on mine.

DOHC "Dual over head cam" has 4 cam shafts in it 32 valves instead of 16 and only SOHC "Single over head cam." with 2 more valve per cyl. you can shove more air in and get more air out.
yeah i have been thinking of maybe stickin with SOHC and get a set of PI heads intake and all that of an 01+ get a set of cams for that and a blower. would be a lil cheaper and less of a head ache to stay SOHC.
Would i really see that big of power going from SOHC to DOHC if i had cams and a blower with the SOHC if i swaped to DOHC would i see a huge power improvment or PI SOHC's would flow enogh for what i want??

wow. yeah i think i might go with SOHC maybe buy a good set of heads or just put a nice set of cams in them.
how much PSI can a stock Eaton M112 make?? is there anything i can do to make more PSI out the same blower....pulley swap i know but i dont wanna blow up the blower.
