need a replacement engine

I was on the highway the other day and all of a sudden the motor starts running on 7 cylinders. I checked the codes and it came up P0308. I went to pull the plug and found it loose and when the plug came out it was missing the center electrode and was beat up pretty bad. I tried a new plug and got nothing and switched COP's and still is missing. I'm going to check the injector just in case it leaned out and burned it up and a compression test before I start tearing everything out but I would say it is toast. The motor (4.6 romeo) has 225 000 km on it so would you even recommend trying to fix it or just put in a replacement. I am leaning towards a used motor but I can only find one that will fit a 2000. I read posts on 01-03 with the PI heads but will it work with my computer without any mods? Also I am interested in using one from a crown vic but I don't know what years will work. Thanks.

92-2000 4.6 2v(car and truck engines) have the npi heads and will bolt right in. just use the truck intake. or you could stick an 01-03 4.6 2v(99-04 mustang gt's had pi heads as well) in it and make a few minor changes and have the pi heads with the stock npi tune and be perfectly fine. i'm pretty sure the only changes that will be needed is tap a hole in intake coolant crossover for temp sender, and i think something about the throttle cable bracket would need to be changed or modified. but i could be wrong about that.

Before you go through the new engine hassel. Remove the cam cover and check for a follower off on the cylinder that was affected. Number 8 I assume. Sometimes a piece of debris from the plug will get lodged in one of the valves and hold it open this will do two things. One it will lower compression so you can't get a air fuel mix and therefore no combustion. Two when a valve is held slightly open the follower will usually fall off. Reinstalling the follower may work but there is a chance also that if this happened the valve may be bent as well from hitting the piston. You never know sometimes you get lucky. I just think it may be worth it to check it out first. Good luck.

Thanks! I'll pull the valve cover tonight or tomorrow to check that. For the crown vic change over I found a running 94 for $400 yesterday so I may do that if I have to. Easier to check the valves first though.

Your 2000 is a NonPi engine but any 4.6 truck Pi engine will work. You are fortunate in that your truck has COP ignition making it easier to swap. At this point you could easily swap for a 5.4.

Just going out now to pull the motor. I was on the phone all week to find a replacement motor. I couldn't find any 00 within eastern canada but I came up with a 03 with 219 000 km. Will this bolt and plug right in without any other mods? If I don't need a chip I'll try it without. Thanks.

Had a mechanic come over yesterday when I was pulling the engine. He took a quick look at it and said maybe to open it up before you get another motor. Then I showed him the plug and he changed his mind. The old plug isn't just broke, it is actually beat up pretty bad. The mechanic thought that the valve must have broke and then the plug got hit for it to look that bad. There was no compression on the cylinder at all. He took the gauge off just to see if there was any air coming out the hole at all. So Monday I will try to see if I can track down a power plant. Just need someone to tell me what is involved in th PI engine swap. Please? Thanks.

Not to hijack the thread but I'm getting ready to replace my old 4.6 romeo as well (98 f-150). and not much luck finding one for under $1300 that runs, but I did find a 94 Lincoln Town Car with the 4.6 for $750, and from what information I can gather its a Romeo engine. My question being, even though they're both romeo engines some of the earlier production 4.6 had the old bellhousing pattern on the block I just cant remember what years. Also the tranny behind the lincoln 4.6 is the AODE I'm pretty sure, are their any differences between between the two engines as far as transmissoin issues go? Also some of the early modular engines had two bolt starters where as my 98 has three bolts. Just curious as to how one would identify if this engine would swap over. BTW I'm not concerned about intake issues with the blocks or pcm wiring etc, just wanting info on transmissoin bolt patterns. Thanks and sorry for the long post.

just to let you know that the 4.6 in the 94 crown vic was only rated at 190 or 195hp. so unless the truck's computer/exhaust/intake is better to up the HP, you will have a slightly lower power. my dad had a 94 crown vic, still have some power to them. they were rated 190 or 195HP and 265Lb-Ft in 94. cant remember exact HP but it is one or the other that i mentioned. other than that, i cant help you. i know car specs and stuff on paper but know very little about fixing stuff.

I read on an old post somewhere about a guy who was trying to get a 4.6 out of a crown vic to work 5 months after he started. The fuel lines were on the other side and some other things. It was about all the info I could find on anyone doing the swap. It would probably work but is more effort than I want to put into my daily driver. I pulled the valve pan today and didn't see anything suspicious. Is there a cheater way to get the crankshaft pulley off? I have a 3 jaw but I don't want to mangle it too much.
