If his discription of a bad right timing chain means that it's broken then beware. What happens when a timing chain breaks ( 95% of the time) is that the cam starts to seize in the cam bearing towers. This puts tremendous pressure on the chain and it breaks. When a chain fails, almost always the valves will hit the pistons damaging them both ( valves and pistons) beyond repair. Lack of lubrication is the primary reason for the cams to sieze in the heads. This means that you more then likely lost lubrication to the rest of the engine as well. Sometimes the lack of oil to a cyl head will be confined only to the head but that is usually an infant failure happening much sooner then 39,000 miles. I personally would look for another engine unless you plan on using just the block and even then it may need to be bored as piston scuffing may have taken place. This is not always the case but I'd say nine times out of ten this is the senario. Good luck.
