5.4 underpowered? Come talk about it

Personally, I do believe the 5.4 is underpowered seeing as it has 300hp and i have an '04 which is the new body style. During this year, dodge had the hemi with 345hp stock! Even the new '09 F150s only have about 320hp and the new rams have 390hp!!! Ford needs to step up their game with the Triton. I know trucks arent built for speed but I am definitely a fan of goin fast

Dodge=POS. I've had them and I can say with certainty I would not trade my truck for the same year of Dodge my kid has a 99 and mine is a 99. I've also been thinking of getting a new one been looking at Ford Chevy Dodge and while for dmay mot have the most powerful engine they have the best truck. Tritons are well made reliable motors that last a long long time.

I don't think the 5.4 is underpowered. Besides, I'm not driving a racecar.

The 5.4 is a lot less sluggish once you get a custom tune.. And the reason F150s aren't as "fast" as the competition is because they are HEAVY, just like a truck is supposed to be.

I think it is without a doubt underpowered, lol. 300hp, sure, great, at the flywheel. This truck is a dog. It pulls fine, I guess, but lord it's slow. A lot of people on here get defensive because of BLIND brand loyalty, but you're right. Nearly every other truck manufacturer has managed to step up their game, what is Ford's problem? I will agree, that I Think Ford's are built better and are generally better quality trucks, but that is not the issue here.

Couldn't have said it better about the blind loyalty, because if Ford was throwing out the numbers the toyota was then that would be all we would hear about on here. But since it isn't the best comeback is buy a car if you want to go fast and have power

But they definitely need to step up their game.

I totally agree! When I put my pedal to the floor, my truck puurrrs through the ROUSH EXHAUST, tachs up to 5 grand, & moves just fine for a 6000 LB vehicle!.........On a 4x2 it must be even better!............

X3

Fords have always been outperformed power wise, but have always looked better, rode better, and been more durable than the competition. I think the 5.4 3V should be the new 4.6 and the 6.2 should take the place of the 5.4.

If you want to spin wheels I think Ford does loose. But I don't think that it's underpowered. I think it's just over built. In pulling and real world applications I have never seen any brand truck "out truck" a Ford of equal caliber.

If you want more power though it's really really easy to add power to the 5.4, compaired to GM and the Ford will work more reliably. Fords buisness model is also sensible. GM blows ***. They spend blindly and then overcharge for their vehicles. That is my opinion, YMMV.

Ford builds real trucks. They keep the torque curve down low where it belongs on trucks. This of course equates to lower peak HP numbers. The other manufacturers shift up their torque curves to get higher peak HP numbers, essentially to appeal to idiots. If you want real top end charge, get a freakin' sports car.

x2.

The 5.4's long stroke, small bore, and SOHC = strong lowend power with poor peak #'s. The F150's 5.4 makes 80% of its torque at 2K RPM. The only factory motor ever put in a vehicle with a longer stroke than a 5.4/6.8 that I know of is a 8100 Vortec. All other factory BB's have smaller strokes than 5.4's, and by a decent margin. Modular 3.552" bore FTL!

I will admit that F150 does feel pretty slow, but I think its more than just the power it makes. First I'm pretty sure the F150 is the biggest 1/2 truck sold today. Also(atleast with the 05+ Mustangs) you have these POS Drive-by-wire TB's, and PCM's that manage the cars power delivery, and it gives them this refined, smooth, Mercedes-Benz like electrical feeling power delivery that does nothing to inspire performance enthusiast's. My old 99 GT felt faster than a 05 GT to me, but I guarantee you it wasn't. And you can't fully get ride of it with a tune.

when your 5.4 is outran by a little 4.6 v8 chevy, a titan , a hemi, a tundra you have to start to wonder what is the deal with ford engines and why you just happen to pick the make of truck with the least powerfull engine out of the other automaker trucks.
from a dead stop my 5.4 is a freakin dog the only truck i have been able to keep up with from a dead stop is the 5.7 hemi and it was at the track and he won. at 70 on the hwy it will leave the 5.7 hemi but not from a take off the titan and chevy about the same the toyota just forget it you aint keepin up with it. the powerstroke in the sig at the bottom no way in hell will this 5.4 keep up with that 6oh. but the 5.4 leaves somthing to be desired
