5.4 underpowered? Come talk about it
i have a buddy with a 03 f150 5.4 2v(farm truck) that pulls an excavator around his property and he pulls it through all the holes in the dirt and all. same guy has a gmc 1500(not sure of year but its the 03 body style) with the 5.3(everyday driver) and he used it to pull the excavator because the battery was no good in the ford. that gmc just barely got the trailor moving and as soon as it hit the first hole, he called me to jump start the ford, unhooked the gmc, got the ford hooked back up and he was on his way. IMO fords stock tunes are slower than the competition, but far from underpowered.
oh and my grandpas 07 tundra just recently blew his brake caliper and one of his axles was close to breaking. thats what the dealer told him anyways.

I seen a guy hook his Power Stroke 3/4 ton to fully loaded Gravel Train lol - 157,000 lbs and the Train Driver kept wheel hoping before getting to the top of the hill.
The Power Stroke didn't make things any better, but it was trying. The wheels (Front ones) would spin dig and stop for second, -then spin dig and stop again. - Just for a second.. I 'll never forget that . I had to go get the 6 - The Gravel Train could relax in Neutral - The 6 didn't need any help lol.
Damn that sounds like Chester, Chester has a 97 5.4L and pulls a Deere = Excavator, - Track Hoe. Those are at least 35,000 lbs on the the trailer.

I mostly do not agree that the 5.4 is underpower
I have a 1999 ford f150 with the 5.4 in it and it got some snap but the funny thing is that is has **** acceleration from 2nd gear to 3rd gear but thats an easy fix with a programmer.
I have a friend with a 1998 ford f150 with a 4.6 in it and that will beat my 5.4 of the line but the 5.4 has the overall advantage in the long run because the 5.4 has a great top end speed and thats where it make all the lost ground up.

maybe your friend has lower gears than you do
In my opinion the stock tunes in these truck's are what really hold's them back. The torque management really hurt's our power delivery also. I've never raced my cousin's 06 chevy when both of our truck's were bone stock but I do know that with equal mod's both of our truck's fun side by side drag racing. His truck is an 06 crew cab, 2wd,5.3v8 and has the factory 20's with 3.73 gears. His mod's are Hypertech tuner,s&b cold air intake and true dualed exhaust. My truck is an 04 crew cab,2wd 5.4v8 with 17" wheels and 3.55 gears. My mod's were hypertech programmer, modified factory intake and true dualed exhaust. We raced from 0-120mph and we were side by side the whole time until at 110mph and I pulled ahead by maybe a foot. Now I have an edge programmer,Aem brute force intake and dual 40 series flowmaster's dumped and my truck feels even faster he still has the same mod's so I'm sure I can beat him pretty good now. I just don't understand all of this talk about the 5.4 being underpowered. It doesn't have 400 horespower but it sure feels like a mustang compared to my 3.0 v6 ranger I traded for this truck. Also to the people that mentioned something about our trucks not being as good at power braking as other manufacturer's you gotta look at the fact that our truck's have disc brakes on the rear. My truck will easily roast the rear tires now that my rear brakes have worn down a little. My friend just got an 06 Gmc crew cab,2wd with the 5.3v8 for a graduation present. His truck is bone stock and you have to **** on the rear tire's to get that truck to spin the rear tire's and from the seat of the pant's feel it isn't any faster than my truck was when it was stock but it still has enough power to satisfy my need for speed.
if you have a new body truck, i'd consider turning that edge into a gryphon through powerhungryperformance.com. with the aftermarket intake you are most likely running lean and the edge doesnt have custom tunes for aftermarket intakes. just saying that for your engines sake. if you have the heritage edition then theres nothing to worry about.

Time it yourself- The 3 valve is ALLOT slower than this stock, but with tunes you'll beat me, yea , big difference,
I'm just running the factory tune, with allot less HP and over a quarter million miles on the Motor and trans..

That MAF has to be spotless / PCM must be rebooted.

Drive a Dodge 5.2/4.7 and you will not think a 4.6/5.4 is underpowered, those trucks are worth less. Yes, Ford does not have the most power but Ford is built to a higher quality. I had to tow my neighbors 2005 Dodge 1500 4.7 with 36000 miles one because the tranny went out.
