If I had to drive that many miles a day and didn't have to haul anything, I sure wouldn't do it in ANY pickup truck unless someone else paid for the gas. I'd be driving a high mileage 4 banger sh1tbox.

i posted on the other thread in the V8 section...

but just so we know i work on the interstate, road maintnance and thats mostly what we do is drive, normally takes longer to get to the job than to work on the job and yet we still dont go 500 miles a day

Right now we are normally seeing around 150-200 miles a day. And thats mostly on the 6.0 diesels

Our 5.4 F150's get about the 200-250 a day, but thats mostly just the bosses that drive those.

So 500 miles a day? im driving a SEMI or a car

i will only drive and f150... and i want something that i will more or less never have to worry about breakin down... the 4.2L is a stalion... i know i have one... i just heard bad things on the 4.6L but as it looks looks like its pretty good motor... and i will only need to haul a boat every now and again so the 4.6L will be enought right? and the 5.4L the only reason i would buy it would be for more power... but if i chip the 4.6L i would prly get jsut what the 5.4L does for power and trq... and with the saving between the two i would be able to chip it for about the same price...

so in all aspect what engine of the three 4.2L 4.6L and 5.4L is the most reliable do you guys think... im thinkin the 4.2L is but it just dont have quite the nuts i would like... i mean i have to have it pinned to get up a small hill in 5th gear.

and they make a 4.6L manual trans dont they?

should i get the 4.6L automatic or manual?

i wouldlike a manual better... but... yeah

One drawback with the manual transmission V6 is that the tow capacity is much less than the V6 with automatic.

Jesus...

I don't know how many times I've seen this spouted about on this site. The 5.4L HAS made Wards list numberous times. Actually, the 4.6L and the 5.4L have made it the same number of times. However, Ward's 10 Best Engines list is a complete joke with some of the crap they put up. And yes, the 4.2L has never made it.

I'd pick either the 4.6L or 5.4L.

you have never seen someone who does this? my bro does it with a 2007 6.0L chevy... its 2 years old and has over 175,000 on it now... and i may be doing kind of the same thing but will only do it with an f150...

yeah of course a car would be better mileage but a car wont haul what the pickup may need to... hes a sales man for a lumber company and drives around and tallys how much lumbe they will need to build the house or what ever it is there building and the semis haul it there... i dont know why he uses a pickup... maybe becasue that is all he wanted to use and the owner of the company is letting him becasue my bro and him are best friends. and becasue a car is worthless to a lumber company...

i may be taking his position so he can move up... and i will only use an f150... so im thinking the 4.6L is good enough...

andi need good mileage casue this will be my pickup the company will just pay for it... so when im noton the job i will need to have good mileage casue i will be paying for it... that is the only thing i will have to pay for tho... company will pay for anything that goes wrong... so yeah... i need a reliable engine that is not gunna break down and will last a long time getting good mileage...

4.2 newer than the one you have now with a manual that runs right.

The tow ratings with the 4.6 manual are the same as the 4.2 manual. It's a tranny input shaft limitation.

Since 1998, the 4.2 *should* have made that list. It's every bit as reliable as a 4.6 or 5.4.

That is the exact reason I bought my 4.2... I was a manager for lumberyard at the time and did quite a bit of driving to jobsites couple hundred miles a day sometimes and only hauling lumber occasionally........ Go with the 4.2

yeah a couple hundred a day is reasonable... thats what i do.

but 500-800 thats crazy. i can see it every once in awhile drivin that much but on average he plans to drive 600+ miles a day? And as far as im concerned he wont be moving very quickly so he will be driving 10+ hours a day? Geuss your workin long hours.

good luck man, but for some reason i think this is another one of those goose chases that F150online is so popular for

i still stand by the 5.4 especially if you plan on hauling anything at all.

I've seen a bunch a 4.6L's spit plugs. A few documented on this site. The 5four was better known for doing this at one time, - they had over torqued them at the factory. I believe that was back in 99.

Heads on the 4.6L and 5.4L's are almost identical. So much so, they are interchangeable. The plug chambers are the same = 4threads.

If your looking for economy - Ford offers other models. If you want a truck that work's hard, that's fun to drive, reliable and has half way decent mpg's,-go for the 5four.
