4.2L, 4.6L, 5.4L question for everyone!

okay a question for everyone!

all three are the same pickup...
2002 automatic regular cab long box "only diffrence being the motors"

if you were someone who drove around to people to sell them something for your company... prly put and average of 500-800 miles on a day... not hauling anything just driving the pickup.
In there "STOCK" versions what would you pick?
mileage being a big factor!
4.2L, 4.6L or 5.4L?

2 or 4 wheel drive?

4.6.

1 the 4.6 is a very reliable engine.
2 the 4.6 and 5.4 get about the same mpg
3 the 5.4 would be overkill for that kind of job
4 if you ever need it for towing then it would be there if you need it but only for light trailors/loads.
5 i'm not a big fan of driving in a truck with the 4.2 and automatic. it would have to be a manual transmission for me to want a 4.2.
6 i'd prefer a v8 over a v6 any day.

nothing against the 4.2, its an excellent engine, but i just prefer a v8. i prefer the 5.4 but as i already said it would be overkill.

I'd say the 4.6, and Matt basically made all the good points.

If you are going to use like a car then get the 4.2. If you are going to use it like a truck get he 5.4. The biggest spread in MPG between the 4.2 and 5.4 in town would be at best 5mpg. At 500 miles per day you will consume about 8 more gallons per day and at 800 miles per day you will consume about 13 more gallons. 8 Gallons * 5 days * 48 weeks is 1900 gallons per year. At 13 gallons it is 3120 gallons per year. What is the price of gas in your area? Just for argument sake take of f3-400 gallons from the results and calculate your costs from that.

The 5four does everything better. The V6 is suppose to get better mpg's, but the truck we had for awhile with the 4.2L didn't prove to be that great. It ran great, but the 5.4L had better economy for some reason. IMO the 5.4L engine is the best, it has a higher residual value (wonder why?) - so if you can afford the purchase, why not get the best all around? She comes in handy as well. If you have to hook to something heavy, no problem. If you have to pull a school bus out of the ditch, you can handle her.

They all are reliable, but the 5.4L take less effort for every task. I'm sure you can do the math.

The 4.2L may be a little less at the pump, I posted my experience with one. - Just Mine.

jbrew,

I think your 5.4 had better traction on the road compared to the mud fields the 4.2 plowed....

can the f150 actually get traction to pull a bus out of a ditch? as far as fuel mileage goes, i'd have to agree that i havent seen a 4.2 do all that great around town. my 5.0 got me 11.625mpg this last tank and my buddy(owns a v6 f150) got gas the other day and he said it came out to about 11 and a half. but in all honesty i wouldnt even drive an f150 with the job description. i'd probably drive a ranger.

Unless you just have to have the 4x4, I'd avoid it. It's far more expensive to drive than a 2 wheel drive in both maintenance and fuel mileage.......remember, we are just driving from appointment to appointment selling stuff. A 4.6 2 wheel drive will be the pick of the bunch. It'll get as good or better fuel mileage than the 4.2 and beat the 5.4 hands down. The 4.6 has been on Wards Ten Best Engines list for over 10 years- the 5.4 and 4.2 have never made it. The 5.4 has issues with spitting spark plugs ( you said year model 2002) and frankly in stock form doesn't make that much more power than a 4.6.( 2002, remember) but eats a lot more fuel. I'd be looking for an extended cab 4.6 automatic 2 wheel drive XLT if I had the decision to make.

Definitely the 4.6.
Nice economy for a V8.
Nice sound. Easy to mod.
Takes well to boost.
Extremely reliable.
