K&N Oil Filter

Are they worth the money? Are they proven any better than the Motorcraft filters. I run Motorcraft 5w-20 with a Motorcraft filter in my 04. I was thinking about trying the K&N out.

He's talking about the oil filter, not the air filter

i put the K&N oil filter on my truck only because it comes with that nut on the back so its really easy to snug up and take off.
I have tried every tool out there and nothing seems to work that great. The last time i put a filter on, the tool that i was using punched a small hole in the filter and it was the only tool that i had that worked in the space that Ford provides us.

The tool was the one that is a big circle with a square 3/8 hole so you can fit an extension in it, and when you tighten it, it tightens the circle and poked a small hole in my filter.

I wish that all filters came with a "nut" on the back of them, very good idea.

That tool is just supposed to be used as a removal tool. There's your problem right there.

I never use a filter wrench when putting the new filter on. Of course, some of us may have a better grip than others...

I like K&N. Worth the money? I don't know. It can cost up to twice as much. After all, we're talking about spending $10 on a filter. You can get a filter for $5. Does it have better filtration? People have already done a lot of testing on their own and have already posted results online. No doubt about it. Not all filters are equal. But it's up to you to decide if you want to spend more. Is it worth it to save a few dollars and have a filter that does not filter as much? $5 X 4 oil changes a year is $20. That's $100 during the 5 year warranty life. Beyond the warranty, will that filter really prolong the life of your motor?

I use it. Along with synthetic fluids. Is any of it worth it? That is up to you to decide. It's not as if synthetic fluids and a better filter will make your engine last forever.

i was always told to put it on as tight as you can with your hand and turn it a 1/4 turn with a wrench. and the angle that i have to bend my arm/wrist along with the fact that my hand and the oil filter is oily doesnt really get it that tight.

Yes, that is why one should clean the hands with a rag as well as the filter then giv'er a twist.

But, this is a perfect example of everyone being taught different.

I have gone after those filters that you guys tighten with a wrench, and, they aren't fun to get off sometimes. Even when I hand tighten them, I still have to use a wrench to remove them, at change time.

To each their own. Good luck!

The silicon anti-drain back valve in the MotorCraft FL-820S Filter is the best in the business, it's positioned on the top of the filter, not on the botton like all others costing twice as much......translates into a much better operating/oil flowing filter, especially upon cold startup! .........My truck has not & will never see any other oil filter period!.....
