Must be driving under 35 mph everywhere he goes. Otherwise I'm gonna have to call bs on that. The only car I'm aware of that averages that kind of mpg is the Honda Insight which you don't see too many of. I could definitely see a prius averaging anywhere from 36-46 mpg under normal driving but not almost 60.

You'd be surprised.
Visit a few of the hybrid sites.. they have hyper-milers doing over 70mpg in prius.

I agree 59 mpg takes some doing, but its certainly possible to exceed 50 mpg at speeds around 55-65mph.

My neighbor's son is a civil engineer and bought one after he test drove ours. He commutes 60 miles round trip to work and he's gotten really into the hyper-miling. His best is 61.4 mpg .
btw.. prius has a very accurate computer which actually measures pulse width and frequency of injectors to calculate fuel consumption. It has several memories to save "overall average", "per tank average" and then real time consumption. I like the real time for drafting behind SUV and big trucks. I discovered I don't have to tail gate to benefit. If behind a large 18 wheeler I can usually find a sweet spot around 150' behind and still get a 4-8 mpg improvement. Tire inflation on prius is very important and can make a difference of as much as 5 mpg. Most will discover an improvement 3-5 mpg once they inflate to 40/42psi most hyper-milers recommend. Still within tire manufacturers recommendations but makes for a rougher ride.

I was happy to discover that a large number of Prius owners are Ford truck owners and still have their trucks like me.

I can't help but laugh at all of the car commercials boasting about their "30 or 35 MPG highway". Whoopty frickin' doo! I got 41 MPG when I drove my girlfriend's 10 year old Grand Am (2.4L) when we went on a weekend getaway.

Oh boy. Not this again.

Toyota makes very nice cars and trucks. Ford makes a few nice cars and trucks.

There are lots of folks that hate Toyota just because they are not American owned. There are lots of folks that hate Ford because of reliability issues.

But, don't worry. Within a few years Toyota will buy Ford and everyone will hate the combined brand or......... will they love it?

What will everyone hate when Toyota buys Ford and GM?

I don't see any difference between tuners and hyper-milers. Both are pushing the capabilities of their vehicle.

If I drove mine more I'd probably get into hyper-miling.

That's like saying there is no difference between pacifists and war mongers. Because they are both into opposite extremes then they are the same thing? Lol...

I'm getting a cattle guard put on the front of my truck, and the next hyper-mileing idiot that endangers everyone around them with their stupid, selfish driving tactics, I plan on running it over.

This is a ford f-150 board so the is a ford bias. I myself own 3 fords. Toyota is an international company just like Ford. I can go buy Toyota stock just like I can Ford. I like the history behind the Ford nameplate and I've not had to many problems with the companies products. If I did buy a Toyota I would not feel guilty about it any more than I would if I bought a Chevy. Both companies offer there stock for sale in the US and many Americans own it. Many of there cars are manufactured here. The buy American thing just isnt relevant in todays world. That said Chevy Dodge Toyota Nissan Honda suck. Ford rules..

So the miniscule profit people in the U.S. can make from buying a Toyota stock is equal to the revenue on a state and national level that a major manufacturing plant with thousands of employees brings to the U.S.?

Just because YOU "don't get it" due to ignorance and a lack of education on the subject matter that makes it ok? Ignorance is bliss indeed....

And NASCAR is the essence of tuning and hyper-miling combined.

Everybody has right to spend their money anyway they like, however I've got a real problem with supporting terrorist.

Instead of running down Americans with your cattle guard equipped truck why don't you load it up and take to the middle east and do us some good there. I'll even pay for your gas.

edit...
FYI.. People with large trucks and SUVs drive slower than hybrid hyper-milers.. Hybrids have a technique called Pulse and Glide. When a hybrid pulses its usually 2-3 times quicker off the line than a truck. The idea is to get the car up to driving speed as quick as possible with the electric motors and then let the very efficient Atkinson cycle engine sustain the speed. Gliding is about the same for pickup trucks and hybrid so there isn't much problem there..

Something I've notice in past couple of months driving the 2.5 miles to my shop, are the number of Mexicans and teenagers driving big trucks and SUVs with all the windows down when its 100 degrees outside. I used to never see that.

Well I think we can all say that Toyota has its perks and neg's just like any other brand. All of the salesman I have ever dealt with are jerks and try and get every $ out of you that they can. ANYWAY I drive an F150, my dad drives a 99 Taurus wagon, my mom drives an 03 Expy, and my sister drives a 93 BMW (she's the black sheep lol). Anyway We are a Ford Family, I wouldn't say that I would never buy anything other than a Ford.....BUT I love my F150 so much I have never had a problem with it that wasn't either miniscule or MY dumb fault, so I won't change! If I was to buy a different vehicle I would still keep it American, I will never ever own a foreign 4 wheeled vehicle (motorcycles may be a different story) lol.
