I have the opportunity to buy a 2001 supercrew with a bad 5.4 motor for very very cheap. My question is how much would it cost to have a new motor installed? It is a 2wd. If you guys have an idea about rebuild vs. crate motor, and labor, I would appreciate it.

Modulars tend to be expensive. I'd say a used engine would be $2000 minimum and a new rebuilt would be $4000 minimum. If you plan getting a genuine Ford replacement, it will be significantly more.

 

I just had a Reman 5.4 ltr dropped in my 2000 f-150 this week at the dealer and it cost 5700 after taxes the quote was 5500. a little mom and pop shop quoted me over 6k so i went with the dealer.

 

I got a "semi-used" engine for my previous F150 at a junk yard for $700... lets just say that there is a reason why her name was Christine.

 

You got a great price on that engine... I called greenleaf auto parts and they wanted to charge me 2100 for a used engine, with no idea what the mileage was. I decided to go ahead and get a new one.

 

I have a 2003 castings, March 2005 factory Ford rebuild motor. I bought it along with other motor from a dismantle yard I do some business with. They were obviously not aware that it was as new as it was or a Ford rebuild I guess. I found the metal rebuild tag on the driver side block. I'm selling it, it is a 2 valve 5.4l. I figure it has about a years run time on it, and it was pulled from a wrecked vehicle as noted in his computer.

I did, but I got it from a U-pull-it place here in El Paso, pretty much the F150 capitol of the world. Seems like everybody drives one here, so parts can be pretty cheap. It was probably a good call to get the new one given that with a used one, you really don't know what you're getting. An up front cost is always better that getting nickel and dimed to death replacing part after part.

i would look around..or look online...you can get cheaper than 5700$$$...thats just crazy....5700 i could get a built motor...

 

5700 was total cost of engine, removal and replacement.. from the dealer, i thought it was high also until the little maintenance shop quoted over 6 grand.

 

I'm just wondering... I checked the value of my 2000 5.4 4x4 auto the other day, 104k miles, average condition.. said it was worth like $6000... What is the thought process that you go through when deciding to spend $6k on a new engine in a vehicle that all together is only worth 6k? I'm not criticizing, i'm honestly wondering what other factors play in that i'm not thinking about..

 

Yes, I definately took that in consideration.. I could have spent that on another used vehicle, and purchased something that I had no clue how it was maintained. I am an aircraft mechanic, the only other times it has been to the shop was for new tire replacement, rotate and balance, and alighnments. I have done all the other work myself. I have life time warranty on virtually all the parts I have replaced, I.E. ball joints, shocks, brake pads, even my rotors are lifetime,I even have a lifetime alighnment on the truck...The tires are not even a month old, spent over 500 bucks on those. Owning the vehicle since new, I know everything else is in good mechanical working order. Plus, I really do not want another truck payment and buy a new one. And, last of all look up the price of your truck with 5000 miles on it. It is considerably higher, a remanufactured engine installed by the dealer definately rose the resell value of my truck, even though I have no intentions on selling it. A vehicle is not an investment, I consider it more of an expence. So with all the factors considered, I feel it was less of an expence to have a long block installed and keep on trckin'. Good question though
