2000 F150 5.4L Cylinder 3 Misfire error code

Hello overyone. I am new to the site as well as almost completely non mechanically inclined so please forgive me if I don't use the right part names or something. I have a 2000 F150 5.4L V-8 with 137000 miles on it. I was driving yesterday morning with about an 1/8 of a tank of gas when I came to a stoplight. The truck started acting like it was going to die so I pulled over. It never did but once I started driving it again it started misfiring at acceleration from stop and again at the 45mph mark once it hit O/D. The service engine soon light came on so I took it to a friend of mine. He hooked it up and it read a Cylinder 3 misfire. We replaced the spark plug and still had the problem. We replaced the COL and still having the same problem. We did not replace the wiring to the COL. We moved the COL to cylinder 6 and still the same problem but this time it read cylinder 3,4, and 6 misfire. We cleaned out the EGR (?) valve and replaced the PCV valve. Still having the same problem. Can anyone give me any other ideas. I have read a lot of forums and fuel injector is mentioned alot. I am hoping it's not the cylinder ring. Please help!!!!!

I think if it was a fuel injector issue you would get that code specifically. At 137k miles, I'd say it is probably wise to change all the plugs and coils, if they are the originals. Did you reset the KAM, meaning did you disconnect the battery to allow the computer to "re-learn"?

I just had a tune up in July of 07 in which all plugs were changed. Some of the coils are originals with the Motorcraft green sticker and some are black with the part number in white on the top which I would think means that they have been replaced in the past prior to me purchasing the vehicle in '03. I have not reset the KAM. Is it as simple as disconnecting the battery and if so for how long do I need to leave it disconnected?

You should replace ALL of the coils at the same time. You can get them on E-bay from global for about $100 while your at it might as well replace the plugs again make sure you use motorcraft plugs. To reboot just disconnect the battery for a few minutes. You should also post the codes you got here so you can get better help. Good idea to fill out your profile with your information to although you did include that in your post.

I never saw the codes myself. My friend was using a code reader to get the codes. I have sent him a message to find out what the exact code was. Thanks for the advice on the battery. R1Jester doesn't seem to think it could be the fuel injector. Would you agree or disagree jethat?

It's hard to say. Get the codes then reboot and see what it does then. I think the most likely thing is some or all of you coils are weak/bad. Thats the most common thing. They need to be replaced at about 100k.

I also have another question. If by some chance what we have done already has fixed the problem, would resetting the KAM cause the engine to run as it is supposed to?

If you run the tank low a lot, you may have a partially clogged fuel filter. I'd change it on general principle at this time and toss a bottle of Techron in the tank.

Resetting the KAM does not hurt the engine/PCM. It just causes the computer to re-learn everything through your normal driving habits. If you are getting multiple cylinder misfires though you might want to go through and replace all the coils and plugs. Here is a link to a thread I posted when I changed my plugs.

Changing Plugs on 5.4

glc has another good point, change the fuel filter. It's cheap and safe insurance.

The fuel filter was changed in July of 07. I also usually fill up at about 1/8 to 1/4 of a tank. I know this is bad but I'm also about 2000 miles past the recommended oil change. Could this be the cause?

Doubtful, it's most likely ignition related. Those codes are there for a reason. Best bet is replacing the COP's and plugs.

I really appreciate all the quick help that has been provided to me and I will post what actually fixes it to this site. I have never actually participated in a forum before so I went out on a limb when I did this. You guys are great and I truly do appreciate your ideas. In reference to the error code, my friend seems to remember that the code was P0303 to start with and once we moved some things around to see if the issue followed the coil it changed to P0303, P0304, and P0306 error code. Does that help any?

Just restates what you said above(cyl 3,4 & 6). Where those the only codes that were retrieved?
