I was getting the same P0401 code and changed everything except the EGR valve and what it ended up being was the passage in the throttle body was getting clogged up by carbon deposits, so first and foremost you need to pull the throttle body off and clean out the passage. There's a plug in the passage that you can remove with an allen/hex head wrench to clean the passage easier, just make sure you count the number of turns it took to get it out so you put it back in the same position. So far I've gone almost a week without getting the code back. Good luck.

Actually , the ports are in the Plenum. Some refer to it as the elbow - The TB is connected to it. Cleaning the Plenum ports (for the 401 code) was posted on page one along with a simple EGR test (for the 402 code). There's never been an allen screw or plug that I'm aware of - You have a pic of that ? That's interesting. I believe you, just never seen it or heard of that before.

Why don't the manufacturers simply put filters on the egr lines to catch the carbon from re entering the intake. I think it would fix 90% of our emissions problems. Does that make any sense?

Allright...I'm frustrated.
I replaced the DPFE on my '99 4.6L (though with a non-dealership item as I did the work long after the nearest dealer had closed).

P0401 is the code I still get.

I applied vaccum to the EGR at idle. The idle did change, but not a lot. It didn't stumble significantly or stall. I could hear the change, though.

I'm thinking I need to get a Genuine Ford DPFE sensor.

Any thoughts or opinions?

99 4six ? Bet your EGR port on the plenum(TB elbow) is packed!!! That's more common on the 4six than 5four for some reason.

And yes, a third party DPFE Sensors either haven't worked at all or dies in the near future. Check your Plenum - If dirty , clean it and try your old sensor - it might be good.

- That's funny , actually this topics been covered pretty thoroughly in this thread over and over again..Same questions

It's quite a bit of reading. What sucks is when you read the same thing twice and don't realize that you have until your almost thru reading it. Damn that comprehension
