any 4.6 upgrades?

I just got out of a lease and bought a 07 STX 4.6 4x4 scab. Any upgrades out there for the motor, that are worth the money? Anything improve the MPG? Not that there is anything wrong with the 16.2 MPG that i'm gettin, just always lookin to improve if I can. Thanks.

Can you prove this ?

CAI is a waste of $$$ if you ask me. Until you have an engine that warrant the upgrade (custom tuned, or other mods needing more air).

Also know, if more air gets in, more dirt gets in.

beige150: Best bet for performance would be gears and custom tunes from Troyer. Or you could run something like the "Edge" . Lots of people are saying they are getting some extra "umph" out of it (although some are complaining about other transmission problems and such)

Check out Troyer Performance.

I'm planning on the edge, and I'm regearing.

I'm not planning on an intake for a few reasons. One is warranty concerns (an edge is easy to rip out, swapping intakes for every dealer visit is a pain), not into more noise for what little power it will make, and last but not least my last try at a CAI and custom internet tune was terrible, actually gave worse driveability and less power than stock. (That was on a 4.6 mustang, not my truck)

If I had a good tuner with a dyno local I'd maybe try it again, but for now I'm keeping it simple, gears and a tune of the stock config.

On the 07 I would get a tuner - Not the edge tuner , to many problems. You'll end up selling it.

A good cold air intake.

A nice cat back system.

THEN an XCAL2 tuner.

You'll be pleased.

Mike will set you up - http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi-bin/ppistore.pl

My AF1 intake and Magnaflow dual exhaust hasn't caused any problems with my warranty.

1st of all get a quality cat-back exhuast. That was the first mod I made on my 4.6L Screw and I gained 1.8 mpg highway right away.

I don't think cai's make much of a difference in mpg, they can add a little hp though.

I would just start going down the list...

exhaust
intake
tune
e-fans
pulleys
retune

regearing will onl help with fuel mileage if you have larger tires. But WILL help in the performance dept.

Hey Duffman - Do you think the 4.56 gears with 35's brought you back to stock? exceeded stock? not enough? Just curious, I want larger tires and if im regearing i want enough for a nice improvement.

Thanks

If you are going to regear, you should get some kind of a tuner anyway to recal the speedo/odo.

there oiled to adsorb dirt breath much better than a paper yes they do save power and gas its a proven fact look it up edge was ok for a better shifting fuel setting never seamed to help much but drain the tank faster

on my 03 Exp, 4.6

I added (in order)

AF1 CAI - not a lot of noticeable gains except a little growl under load

Troyer tuned Xcal2 - instantly noticeable power and greatly improved shifting and range of gears.

E-fans - FAL Kit# 295. Instantly noticeable improvement in hp and mpgs (1-2)

underdrive pulleys - instantly noticeable improvement in hp mpgs and throttle response and again, range. Better torque too (same applies to the efan comment).

I looked at some dyno graphs of the cat-back systems. 10hp gain is only at rpm around 3000 or so, which I rarely hit, so I didn't see the benefit of $$ for some sound, no matter how cool it is

I have the 3.73 LS gearing. Proably could get more out of a gear change, but there is a limit to this madness...

Next up may be a small level kit w/ some new rubber when the time comes.

another victim of comercials and lies.
Not to beat a dead horse:
Its ok bud, if you think it makes your truck better, by all means go for it. They do look nice (I will be buying S&B intake... for the looks).

The filter is NOT the restricting factor in your truck. Throttle body only allows so much air, your stock filter handles that fine. Allowing more air in, ending up being restricted by your throttle anyways. At WOT there is a noticable gain, but minimal. For $300 i guess you can't expect much more.

Also, those open air type CAI, they can get caked with mud and dirt when off-roading. Not your best bet if you see a lot of dust/mud.

Oiled filters still allow more dirt particles by. Many people report having dirt on the intake tube past the filter.

Go check out this threads read it:
https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...ke+worth+it%3F

use the search function, there are plenty of similiar threads.
It may add 1-2 mpg, maybe a couple horses, but nothing you can feel using your BUTT DYNO .

Oh and Edge ? If your going to Tune your truck, make it a custom tune. Not every truck is created EXACTLY the same, therefore a "one size fits all" tune isn't the best, IMO.
