Champion Develops "FIX" Plug for 5.4L 3 valves!
That's the same thing I thought at first... But as I understand the heat ranges of the MC plusgs, they go like this, in order of hottest to coldest:
PZT-2F
PZT-14F
PZT-1F
So if that's the case, then why does only the 14F's have the shield cut higher? The 2F and 1F look exactly the same. So if the theory is that the 14F's shield is cut higher to allow for a hotter running plug, then wouldn't the 2F's shield be cut even higher than the 14F?
I just think there's gotta be more to it, but I don't know what it is....

Hmmm...now that's interesting.........
My dealer installed the 1F in my truck
Bamorris...where did you get your info on the heat ranges? I was searching around a bit and haven't come up with much....from what I have read the 14F should theoretically be a hotter plug.....the longer the insualtor the hotter the plug.....

This site says the same thing.Half a heat range hotter then the H1 and half a heat range colder then the H2.You did say the HT15 was the same as the PZT-14f?

Fordtech1, do the PZT-14F's have a nickel plated electrode shield like the Autolites? It says it helps with corrosion protection.
Would it be possible to tig weld the shield where the crimp is to keep it from coming apart?

IIRC, it was either Quintin or i.ride.suzuki who initially gave that info. The idea was that the original plugs were the PZT-2F's, but they were having some pinging issues. So Ford started recommending their already-in-production colder plug, the PZT-1F... In the meantime, they developed a more suitable plug, somewhere in between the 1F and 2F...
At least that's the store I recall hearing... and like chapdog said, it seems to be confirmed by the Autolite-branded offerings.
I have my champion plugs in hand and about to go on an adventure that not many have been on.. To change the plugs for the first time on my 5.4L 3V '04 F150crew w/91784 miles. Wish me luck, I'll let you know how they run if I get to keep the head's on the truck today.
one last note I made a tool like the one that the ford dealers use. got a 9mmx1 bolt tap and made a 6" long SS rod that I threaded 9mmx1 to use as a puller.

I was wondering the same thing, looks simple enough.

Well, I am very interested in the new Champion plugs as well. I did my original plug change at 55,000 miles (sprayed a little WD-40 on the plugs during removal) with no issues. But, hearing that many have had challenges, I am going to swap out to a one piece design now to avoid any futire challenges.
I do have reservations about using Champions, but these are double platinum, and all the Mopar muslce cars used to come stock with Champions, along with just about every small engine that I have worked on (e.g., lawn mower, weed wacker, snow blower, etc.), so they are supposed to be a decent plug.
I will post after I do the install (I ordered them last week but they are on backorder and will not ship for ten days or so).
