Project BULLETPROOF...dream or reality?
While I'm in there doing the headgaskets I will also address the cams / valves / timing chains / guides / tensioners / headers. It only makes sense. I'm not going to start buying PI parts when I may already have the PI setup. There has to be a fairly easy way to tell before tearing into the top end.
I thought shorties were better for torque and long tubes for HP...is this not the case?
I would consider the Xcal-II before looking at the Edge much further. I love mine and Troyer's tunes can't be beat.

A couple more questions. Mike said he would be VERY surprised if my truck had non-PI heads, and that the change over should have happened about 2 months before my truck was built. He said especially on 4.6's, the castings aren't always there. Neal has had me inspect the intake runners in the past, but this also isn't a sure fire method on 4.6's apparently. To complicate matters, I believe my VIN indicates this to be a Romeo build 4.6L. Is there any way to tell which heads I have before tearing into it?
If I already have the PI heads, I'm thinking about just "knocking out" the intake manifold restriction, gasket matching, and doing cams / headers / injectors. If I were to have the heads worked over on top of all of this, I'd easily be $4,000 deep before it's all said / done, which just isn't reasonable. Especially with gears and a locker to be done. If I don't have to do the head work, I think I can cut this nearly in half.
If I do cams, is this something I will be able to tackle "myself"? I know the valves / springs have to be dealt with at the same time. I found 2 Ford ASE master techs that are willing to "help" me with this job if I get in a pinch. They tell me I also have to replace the timing chains, guides, tensioners, and that I need a degree wheel and alignment tools. I haven't priced any of this yet.
Just want to find some more info out and give a small update. I haven't given up quite yet.

The edge will do you no good. You will need to get a tune as soon as you put differnt cams in there.

Thanks for the 4.6 link...I'll check it out and will post my findings.
Another quick question. I found a 2002 Mustang 4.6L PI with uner 10K miles "like new" for $625. If I'm doing cams, headers, and custom tuning anyway, is this a viable option? Will it drop in with ease or am I dreaming?

I did find some casting on the driver's side head...don't know if anyone can decipher this, but...

EDIT: Great news, I had the last part of that number as "0" rather than "D". Turns out these are PI heads afterall according to these two sources. Now to refer back to the 4.6L pdf to make sure.

Heres a web site that has all the casting numbers broke down. I looked and yours were not on there. Maybe im blind. You sure it was a head casting number?

2001–2002 Romeo
Even though we’re not talking about anything beyond 1999, you should be aware that there is a Romeo "PI" casting out there, too. The 1L2E casting has ladder caps, small bolt holes in both ends and nine bolt holes for the cam cover along with the square intake ports and the small heart-shaped chambers.
This casting number is for a 2001 Explorer, so the "PI" head probably wasn’t used on Romeo engines until then. But, it’s possible that there were some earlier applications in spite of the casting number, so keep an eye out for them when you get a late model Romeo core.
Hells yeah, the 4.6 PDF confirms this too. It does help. I may just puss out and go for cams / long tubes since my pre-cats are gone anyway. Should be an easy install if they fit w/o modification. I'll have to look into that now too.
