Motor cleaning and degreasing.

Do any of you know of a good way to clean oil off of the back of a motor and tranny bellhousing? I have a pretty bad oil leak, and I need to clean everything off under there so I can even tell where it is coming from. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do it with spray stuff and shop towels.

Thanks,
Hunter

rear main seal probably... you have to start by moving the mass of the oil with a rag, then use some dawn or something to help cut the film down.

Use engine degreaser to clean off the oil. What year and model? Sounds like a 1999 f-150 with a 5.4. or a 2000 with a 4.6.

Use the degreaser thing at a quarter car wash. Take care not to hit any electronics.

Remember oil leaks down and towards the rear. if you have it on the top of the bellhousing it is coming from above it. Look closely at the valve covers.

Thanks again guys! I'm going out right now to try to pinpoint the leak. I suspect that it is the driver's side valve cover (I hope it is, as this is the easiest one to get to). I'm hoping that it is not the rear main...That is a job I probably can't do myself.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks,
Hunter

Turned out to be the driver's side valve cover gasket. Gonna go at it this week or weekend.
