The only thing stopping me from getting a newer lightning is that I can't get one in a 4x4 version. I really don't want to buy one and then mod it for that , it just wasn't desighned that way .It may not be practical enough for ford to build , but I sure wouldn't mind having one. I use 4 wheel drive all the time. That would be my do-it-all truck.

You might be a challenge - Every one of my budy's has the 4 doors , all have the 5.4L . Me an my 200,000 mile non PI motor can walk away any where in the RPM's - I'm sure it must be a weight thing. I can be driving there truck and mannn, it sure sounds like it's fast . It looses quite a bit between the flywheel and rear tires.
2wheel drive ? I'll prolly loose that one bigtime! I have that heavy than hell E40D w/tcase and front axle.

I had a '95 with the 5.0 in it and just got a 2001 with the 5.4. The 5.0 struggled with a car trailer so I can't even imagine pulling with anything less?! The 5.4 is definitely an improvement even without a load. But then again, I go for trucks for 3 reasons:
1. Motor to pull a race car
2. Extended cab to haul my two boys.
3. 4x4 for winter driving

As a builder of 5.4 and at one time, the 4.6, I can say the real difference is WHERE the engine was made. Many if not most 4.6 truck engines have been built in Romeo Michigan. Romeo builds mostly car v-8's, whereas Windsor has been Truck Modular Engine Plant, or TMEP. That is in my opinion the which is better, not size alone. It can get more complex with inner plant politics, but remember, the 5.4 has outsold the 4.6 in recent years giving it a wider margin for error too. To sum it up, you're going to get what you're going to get, the 4.6 has less power and maybe uses a little less gas doing it.
