Unhappy Gutless!

I just traded my 2000 F-150 SCab XLT 5.4 in for a 2001 F-150 SCrew Lariat 5.4. My 01 seems gutless, compared to my 00. Is it because of the extra weight, or how it was broke in? Besides the superchips, and expensive add-ons, is there something I can do?

Tune up (plugs, COPS, fuel filter), exhaust, intake, and a tune.

What rear end gear did you have and what one do you have now? That can make a huge difference.

Check the axle code on the driver's door. Axle ratios tend to come higher standard in the interest of better fuel economy rather than performance. The 2.73 axles are a real dog, but good for the highway. There's 3.08, a little better, and the heavy-duty 3.55 is for hauling. A truck can have the same motor, same trans, and drive totally different if the rear ratios aren't the same.

If you have a 5.4, 3.31's are the highest you can get, mine moves pretty well with them and 255/75-16 tires. It did come with 235's stock, so maybe someone put bigger tires on yours (they do look bad with the little tires.)

I thaught they brought back the 3.73 LS, maybe just for the off-road pkg, but I'm thinking 3.55 were available with the 5.4 too!

Um, no. The highest gears you could get in a stock F-150 were 3.73s. Gear ratios went 3.08, 3.31, 3.55, and 3.73.

Question Ummmmm...

Which code says what gear ratio it is? I used to have a link that explained all those codes, but I lost it.

There should be a little steel tab with some codes and numbers attached to the rear end gear cover, look for numbers like 3.55 or 3.31 etc.

The reason your new truck is slower is probably due to the added weight of the 4x4 running gear. There is probably close to 500# difference between a 4x2 and a 4x4.

Hmmmm!

Yeah, I guess that would do it. Besides the fact that it's a SCrew and my 00 is a SCab, that's a lot more weight too.
