I think they're good, in that they're reusable and have a lifetime warranty.

I think they're bad, in that they contaminate mass air sensors, and don't especially filter well.

I personally stopped using them.

I had one on my last truck. I noticed an increase in throttle response but no mpg increase. However, I added dual exhaust at the same time. Definately throttle response but not much of a change in gas mileage.

I am probally going to go back to a stoc paper filter. I just don't think the K&N is worth it, no noticable difference.

Your not going to notice any difference by switching just the air filter. Maybe 3 horsepower by switching to something that will flow a little better, like a K&N, from a stock paper filter. If your looking for power, there just really isnt any. Nothing work the 35 bucks anyway.

However, they are nice since you dont have to change them. Ive ran one for about 30K miles on my current truck and havent had any problems with the oil messing with the MAF. Ive convinced myself thats just user error from over-oiling.

As far as filtering, Im not sure. I suppose since it flows more air it has to be a little more 'open' which could let in a little more dust particles.

I really didnt notice much diffirence with it and the amount of good it does dosent counter the harm it does in letting particles into your engine. In order to stop these particles that the K and N wont catch you have to put a sort of filter condom on and restricts the flow to that of a paper filter.

What makes you think/feel that it doesn't filter as well as a stock paper filter?

Contaminates the sensor? Tell me your experience.

I don't agree with it being the filters fault with either.

But, I'd like to hear the experience you had with it.

Thanks,

Joey

I really like mine as it is cheap and reusable. I take it out to clean every 70 k and look at the MAF, which is fine, clean as shown, oil, let that dry for a while then reinstall. Don't get crazy with the oil, just enough to lightly coat it. Even if I have to replace it now, I've saved over stock ones by far.

On the negative, the cheap foam gasket base of it doesn't stick well and has to be reglued everytime it comes out, oh well.

You're going to chitcan a $35 reusable filter that you already own so you can buy a throwaway filter because you "don't think the K&N is worth it"? No offense, but that doesn't make much sense at all.

Call K&N about the gasket. They will send you a replacement gasket and cement. I did.

Talking

I put a K&N filter in at about 36K on my truck. I have a 97 5.4L. It seemed to breathe much easier. I clean the filter about every 50K. The engine runs smooth as silk, and I haven't had any issues related to the filter. The filter is due for a cleaning.

The truck currently has 213K on the odometer........

Had the same problem with mine. Called K&N and told them the problem. The girl in Tech Support told the they would send me a new one. She admitted that that had a "bad run" where the gaskets were falling off. she asked where I purchased it and did I register it. A week later a new filter. No problems since.
