A footnote to what I just posted...
Most newer factory air filter boxes also include a small crankcase filter mounted inside the box where the fresh air hose attaches, like the carburetted air cleaners had, but most aftermarket air filter assemblies (FIPK, etc.) do not.
Also, I use Mobil 1 10w-30 and a Purolator filter. I try to change both oil and filter around 3000 miles, but not religiously. If the oil smells gassy, I change it.
