Hmmm.... interesting..... how much do you have to compress the spring to let the follower drop out? (I've never rebuilt anything larger than a motorcycle engine)

Oh, yeah, I've seen what pieces in a combustion chamber can do.... That's not a shocker.... just strange to me.....

Also, I wasn't thinking that on a V-engine that the intake plenum is almost a single common chamber. On the I-4 on my motorcycle (the engine I've worked on), the intake runners are long enough that it couldn't happen.... There's no way that the particles of any size would travel 6" back up the intake, past the throttle bodies, and down into another cylinder.

I hope the head builder takes care of the damage in any case.....

Joe,

To be honest I don't know exactly how much to compress the spring to remove the follower. It is not something you would pay attention to. There is a spring spacer ( 303-382 (T91P-6565-AH) ) that is used to keep you from pushing down too far on the spring. I have heard about problems with the followers on the V10 and some V8s. I even think there is a TSB on the issue.

HI!... ***UPDATE***

Well I went out to my engine builders on MONDAY. They removed the two damaged pistons. The #1 piston has a crushed ring landing so it's scrap. So I will be replacing both pistons. The call went into MAHLE and they are sending out two new pistons/rings, pins. Should be here in about 2 weeks. Next time out I'll get some pics of the damaged pistons. They will be weighing the new piston assembly to get it exactly the same as it was before to assure the set-up is still perfectly balanced again. As for the heads we will only be using the FOX LAKE castings. Everything else will be going in the garbage including CROWERS *****ty valve springs. It will be getting new MODMAX MANGANESE BRONZE guides, FERREA PRO stainless steel valves (1mm larger than stock), COMP-CAMS custom cams, COMP-CAMS bee-hive valve springs, retainers, keepers, MODMAX valve seals. The heads need some aluminum repair and will be surface ground slightly, and need to have the new guides ground down to match the FOX LAKE CNC port job. I'm hoping to have it back in and running in about 3 weeks.

***UPDATE***

HI!... Well it's been a while since I have posted in this thread so I figured I'd give you guys an update. Well my engine is still not back together. The two MAHLE replacement pistons should be here this week sometime and I hope to get the short block back in my garage by SAT. The COMETIC head gaskets are still on back order but should hopefully be here by the end of this week. The valves, guides, valve seals are in route and should be here next week sometime. The cams on the other hand are going to be a while. Since I custom ordered CUSTOM GRINDS from COMP-CAMS my cams won't be shipped out for another 3-4 weeks with the valve springs/retainers. So it doesn't look like I will be able to get any track times this year due to the dragstrips close in 3 weeks here locally. I just want to sat a huge THANKS to Mike Troyer for taking care of me on this!!!!! He ordered all the head related parts and is double checking that I get what I need. He's getting the parts to me as fast as he can. THANKS!!!!! MIKE!!!!

HI!... Well my two replacement pistons came in at SEIFKERs today. If everything goes well, I'll have my built short block back in my garage on SAT.

That’s good to hear Neal.
I noticed we have the same pistons except yours are .020 over. They are the center pin Mahle.
Yours- MOD220571I16
Mine - MOD220551I16
Wait until you hear them on cold morning start ups. It’s starting to get cold here and they sound like a diesel until they are warm but Mahle says they are superior for boost applications.
