hesitation issue...
IT'S FIXED!!!!
I ordered a set of coils from Mike T and installed them Thursday...no problems since then. As always, Mike had great prices, service, and shipping.

Yes, a code can be thrown without tripping the service engine light, but in my case, I had no codes. The way it was explained to me in the past was that the service engine soon/check engine light only comes on if there is an emissions related problem - if it's not emissions related, the computer simply stores the code.
My truck had about 57,000 miles on it when all of this started.

Mike T is Mike Troyer (he's over in the computer chips forum). Check out http://www.troyerperformance.com.
He's got them for $200 a set. GREAT deal & they got them to me in about 3 days.
good luck!!

I am experiencing a hesitation/knocking/pinging/shifting issue(whew). I took my 98 Expy (4.6l) to a transmission shop to have the choppy, hesitating shift investigated. They had it for a week, and after all the testing the Tranny tested fine, but they said they were getting engine codes and it needed to go to another shop that works on engines (the dealer). I dropped it off at the dealer and they ran the diagnostic tests and came up with a knock sensor that needs replaced. They also said that it had 2 sheared bolts that need drilled and tapped (pinging noise) and both exhaust manifolds were cracked and need replaced. The knock sensor is INSIDE the engine as per the dealer and hence the engine needs to be torn down to get to it. Dealer estimate for it all (DRUM ROLL PLEASE)... $2200.00. I found a 5.4 still crated for $2400.00 and a 2002 with >5K miles for under $2K.
Decisions, Decisions...
Decisions, Decisions...
took it to autozone today to see if it was hiding a code from me, but no.... i had no codes...

i don't know if this works,i haven't tried it yet,but my cousin's boss has a 5.4 and he had the same problem, and there was moisture on the plugs,i don't know if yall's are doin the same thing.mine also did it,i changed the plugs, didn't stop it coil packs are good.i took the plugs out twice and checked em and i know they were in perfect coil packs too,but this guy said he changed the coil pack boots that slip over the plugs, and it fixed it.and somebody else on here said the dealer told them it was the crankshaft positon sensor,at 5 bucks a piece i think the boot idea is worth the money, especially compared to 50 a piece for coils
just a suggestion

thats not cool...i dont want to spend 400$ without knowing for sure that it will fix my prob..
