hesitation issue...
hesitation issue...
hello,
i recently purchased a used 2001 super crew with 4.6l and 49000 miles on it. ive been happy with it for about the last month, but now it has started hesitating and bucking. at first it was only when it shifted into 2nd and i was just kind of puttering along, but now it is much more frequent, and it is very irritating.
i guess i should add that there is no CEL showing and all gauges appear to be in the normal range.
i was wondering if this is a common problem, and what the culprit usually is....
another question altogether.
does ford have "extended powertrain warranties" on a vehicle that i got used, or is it not transferrable?
thanks in advance for any help, this is my first "american" vehicle in a while, and i sure would hate to have to switch back to imports......

I'd start first by changing the fuel filter and if that doesn't solve it, clean the Maf sensor and check the spark plugs.
Most extended warranties are transferable.

thanks for the replies... i'll definitely change the ff.
garebel,
coilpack?? what the heck is that? or where i should say?
its funny, show me a turbine aircraft engine and im right at home, but alot of times the car engines baffle me and seem way toooo complicated.......

On a 4.6l the coilpacks (two ea) are located in front of each one of your valve covers, your plug wires run from them to the plugs.
On the 5.4l each plug wire has its own individual coil.
Autozone carries three brands: Wells: pt# C924, $41.99
Accel: pt# 140018, $69.99
Beck/Arnley: pt# 178-8222, $85.16.
On the 4.6l there is two bolts, and two wires, and the plug wires holding them on, shouldn't take too long to replace them although you can preform a resistance test on them to see if they are indeed bad, I'm not sure what the readings should be (my book isn't here) but one of the guys should know, or you can search the forums.

thanks for the help yankee,
im new to fords and havent had much time to "explore" the thing yet.. the hesitation is getting worse, so i guess im gonna get my hands dirty earlier than i thought....
hopefully its a coil pack or fuel filter, my wife will kill me if i have to put it in the shop, as i had to talk her into a domestic car this time... (we are long time import drivers)
wish me luck

The 2001 4.6L does not use coil packs, it has the "coil on plug" (same as the 5.4L) each plug has it's own coil mounted right over the spark plug. It's bolted on by one 7mm bolt.
Ohm meter resistance:
Primary - between the two electrical connectors - 0.55ohms
Secondary - between one of the terminals and the plug end spring should read approx. 5,500ohms.

I'm not too good w/ engines, or at least w/ the newer cars. As far as the warranty goes you can't get ESP. The car has to still be under warranty to get ESP. Ford does have just a power train warranty but it would not cover the issues your having right now. The Basic Care might and it’s not that much more for the money. However, because your truck is out of warranty you'll have to get one through another party. Be careful doing this because some are just a rip off and won't cover what you think they might. I would look at getting a warranty through Carmax or your current car insurance. They will not give you the run around like other parties will. I know State Farm Auto Insurance has it. I'm not sure Carmax will do it because it wasn't their car, check w/ them. Hope this helps
I have a 1993 F150 doing the exact same thing.
I flushed injectors, checked brakes, changed fuel filter, changed plugs but not wires, changed air filters, using better grade gas.
I hope one of us finds a cure.
Good luck.

sounds like the coil on plug
my 2000 4.6 was doing the same thing. It took a while for it to throw a code. if you are going to diagnose it yourself definetly start on the passenger side at the back of the engine as these are the ones that fail most commonly so I have read (thats where mine was)

Mine has suddenly developed the same problem just last week. 107K miles. It was running fine, and then, on an interstate trip halfway through a tank of gas, it started stumbling intermittently while going down the road around 80 mph. Pulled off to an exit and it was doing it badly at idle. Filled up with another brand, premium (as that is what my '98 has always required to be happy) and it stopped until I got back on the interstate about 40 miles away.
Started up the next day, and it was doing it pretty badly, then stopped. Today, doing it after I had driven it 10 miles or so.
There is no pattern at all, seemingly. I put in a fuel cleaner, and I'm going to change the filter, but I'll admit it seems more like some kind of ignition problem. I just changed plugs and wires about 10K back.
Early '98 4.6L with 107K miles.

ok, i pulled all of the coil packs and they checked good according to 01screws numbers...i was hoping that would be it, they were relatively easy and i HATE chasing a problem.
guess ill do the fuel filter next, but it sure seems like an ignition problem to me..
oh well YAY ford

coil pack
I had the exact problem happen mostly under light load about 30-35 mph or 50-59 mph. Took to dealer and mechanic was able to detect problem, found problem with 4th cyclinder plug and coil pack bad. Had replace and problem appears to be gone. Had 43000 miles and it wasn't covered under extended warranty $345.00
