Question 5.4 SOHC Intake manifold

Hey fellas, I have a 1996 Mustang GT and want to swap a sohc 5.4 from a 2000 F150 in place of the stock 4.6 sohc. I was just wondering if any of you could give me a little insight about the engine.

Does that engine use coil-on-plug ignition? And do any of you have some good close up pictures of the intake manifold? I've heard that the stock F150 manifold won't fit under a GT hood but that an intake from an econoline E150 5.4 will.

That's about all that I can think of for right now. Thanks alot!!!!

HI!... Well the 5.4 SOHC truck engine has a forged steel crank and powder forged rods (weak) with crack cap technoligy. The pistons are HYPEREUTECTIC and yeild a 9.0:1 compression ratio. The 5.4 makes 350FT/LBS of TQ, and 260H.P at the flywheel. It has a crankshaft that uses a 8 bolt pattern. So make sure your flexplate or flywheel has the proper holes for the crankshaft bolt pattern. It is very easy to get thing engine to make well over 400FT/LBS of TQ and 330H.P with simple bolt-ons. There is a link to my gallery in my lower SIG. Just click it and you can see IN DETAIL pics of a torn down 5.4 and the intake manifold.

Wow! Those are some really good pics on your site! I can see now why they say that their is a hood clearance issue with that intake and the mustang hood LoL!

I've already got a 2.5" off road h pipe with 2.5" 2 chamber flowmaster mufflers, so the exhaust side is already taken care of.

I really appreciate the info. If anyone else has anything to contribute, lay it on me!!!

I'm going to be starting a 5.4 swap into a '99 Stang soon, and will be milling spacers that will allow the stock 4.6 intake (or any other 4.6 intake) to bolt on. The E150 intake might fit under the hood, I don't know, but even if it does it has longer runners and likely less cross-section than the newer Mustang intake. I don't want a Stang with a motor that needs to be shifted at 4500 rpm....

Good point. Shifting at 4500 would suck, does the 5.4 intake really make it like that?

I also heard that you can use the old 94-95 tbird cast manifold as long as you lengthen one side of the runners. I saw a picture of it on some guys site that put a 5.4 in his tbird, I just can't remember the site name.

I've seen that too, its honestly a hack way to do it IMO. You'll never find an engine builder who would spec a combo with one side of the motor being fed with longer runners than the other. As far as the shift points, well, take whatever the Econoline shifts at (4500 was a guess, but I bet its close), and if you use the same intake power is gonna fall off at the same rpm in a Mustang. I only want mine to pull to around 5500 for now since I have an auto, I think the stock Mustang intake will support that. I'll probably be doing ported heads and cams later, a little more intake duration on the cams will extend the powerband.

Hmm, supposedly Reichardracing.com will be making an intake for the SOHC 5.4 pretty soon, they already have one for the sohc 4.6 engine. I may just use the f150 intake manifold and get a new hood or modify my stock hood with a scoop until they come out with the manifold.

The Reichard intake will be an interesting piece on a 5.4, on the 4.6 its pretty much race only but an extra 50 cubes will lower the powerband. Of course, its also $1400 or something like that....

That's a bit much, but if I end up supercharging it, that will be a good addition to the engine. I'm planning on staying NA for a while until I can afford a really nice build of the bottom end and at the same time, do some nice head work.
