Ecoboost Verdict?
#76
What is your rear end gear ratio? This has alot to do with mpg! I'm looking into getting an ecoboost, and I tow alot with my current truck. What gear ratio should I get but still give me decent gas mileage?

I get 22 MPG on the highway if kept under 70. In town, lots of hills in Western PA I am able to average 15 MPG.
Next week I start towing a 6,000 trailer, fist trip will be 400 miles with lots of hills, should prove interesting. I am expecting about 10 -12 MPG
The truck has the 3.73 rear and heavy duty towing - Platinum Addition

I have a King Ranch 4X4 with 6.6 bed, 3.73, and off road package. I drive 70 miles daily for work, mix of 2 lane, interstate, and gravel road, hilly terrain. Just about 5000 miles on the truck. All I can say about this truck is AWESOME!! It drives like a dream, I drove a 1996 6-speed TransAm for over 227,000 miles and I swear this truck is as much fun if not more so since I now have clearance along with all the power I want or need. Since I drive so many miles I have started driving at 60 most of the trip and I am averaging 20 MPG. My husband used the truck to pull his boat and averaged 14.7 MPG. I would say this is quite impressive since I live in an area that is not flat by any means, Rocky Mountain front, and we have a winds over 35 mpg regularly. The last few mornings at 15 degree weather, my mileage has dropped to around 19.5 still not bad. I am running regular which is 85.5 octane here in Montana, I tried a couple of tanks of premium gas and did not see any difference in mileage or power. Driving 60 seems slow, but the few times when I have needed to pass, step on the pedal and I am doing over 90 before I can get to the front of the big rig I'm passing! The first time I test drove the Ecoboost I couldn't quit smiling and I haven't since. The only regret I have is I could not get the 36 gallon tank, but I still can go 460 miles on a tank.

Here's my latest installment on Fuel mileage... I'm extremely pleased and this tank included about 30 to 40 miles of towing a 10,000 lb Skid steer...
You can see I averaged over 20mpg's on this tank... I usually average 23 with no towing.

I have a 6000 lb 28 foot cuddy cabin I tow all the time with mine. I also have several friends with travel trailers I frequently tow...a couple are in the 7K range and one in right at 10K loaded and my E/B pulls all of them with little to no effort.
With the 10K trailer on the back I was getting 13mpg's at 65 mph.

Wow, you guys are getting some great mileage!
I drove from the Washington, DC area to north of Pittsburgh, PA this weekend, and the truck said I got 18.7 mpgs for one tank, which was mostly highway, with about 15 miles of hauling around 250 lbs in the bed. Coming home, we had around 300 lbs of stuff in the bed, and on the highway, the trip odometer read 20.2 mpgs.
Before the trip, I was averaging around 15.5 mpgs - mostly in town, with a small amount of highway, and a lot of stop-and-go.
Granted, my truck only has 1,100 miles on it now, and it had under 600 when we started. Every 10-20 miles, I would kick it into a different gear, speed up, or slow down for a bit just to vary the RPMs.
I'm hoping it improves by 1-2 mpgs once the odometer reaches the 7,500 or 10,000 mark.

I cant believe the mileage some of you are getting!!!!! I do alot of mixed driving but only average 15.1mpg. I also have a 4x4 with 373 gears and 20" rims that dont help but I am still in love with and very satisfied with this truck so far! I'm going on 3 months and 3000mi. Compared to my 2007 F150 with 5.4L that only averaged 13mpg with less power and towing capacity I honestly have nothing to complain about!!!

I hear you. My last tank avg was 14.2mpg 50/50 driving.

FX2 w/ 3.55LSD and I consistently can manage 21mpg on the highway at 72-74mph. I drive a lot of highway for my job and it remains there very consistently. My driving frequently takes me up I-35 from Austin to Dallas and up to Oklahoma and it is with .2 mpg every trip of the previous and other trips. 16.8-17.0 average when I do 100% city driving.
To answer the original question though, there is no verdict. The motor in the truck has only been out 9 months and I doubt many people have gone over maybe 20k miles yet. Just as many have said, the longevity remains to be seen as time goes on and as more of us get the miles up there on the trucks.
However, with that being said, Ford has chosen to put almost all their eggs in one basket on this. We already have the 3.5EB in the truck and SHO, the 2013 SHO will have that and a 2.0 4 cylinder EB option, the Explorer and Edge are going to have the 2.0 EB option, and there is a 3 cylinder EB going in the overseas Fiesta if memory serves from the last press release I read. Ford plans 90% of their vehicles to have an EB option by model year '13 or '14. I'm no CEO or Marketing person, but it doesn't take one to figure out that there is NO WAY you would be doing this if you weren't 1000000% positive that not only will they be extremely reliable, but can do anything and everything they claim. Hell if it doesn't, Ford will be the next one at the government's door step begging for money.
I bought mine because I refuse to buy from any bailed out company and I drove all 4 power plants that Ford offers. The EB fit me best and works best for what I need it for. That's all any of us can do. The naysayers can say all they want, but I would be VERY surprised for any longevity or durability issues to arrive and that "Verdict" to be anything other than A+ fantastic.

I worked for a Ford dealership and extensively drove every engine available in the F-series lineup recently...I currently Drive a 2010 FX4 Screw w/ a 5.4 3v with 9k miles on it...needless to say after driving a 4x4 EB I am just waiting for one to come in in the right color/options combo...while all the engines perform as they should and are all worthy of owning, IMO the EB is a must test drive before making a decision...btw, I've had diesel owners saying wow and trade for them after driving...good luck

Yeah 13-13.5 mpg average for me 50/50 driving.... If I REALLY baby it, keep it at 70 mph or less on the hwy and say have 60%hwy/40% city I can get 14-14.5 mpg. All hand calculated, not dream meter...
This is with 4x4, 3.73s and 305/55/20 Nitto Terra Grapplers (33.25"x12.5") and a 2" level up front.
If I beat on it at all, it drops into the 12 mpg range QUICK....
I havent taken it on a full on hwy trip yet but... If it gets 15 mpg I will be suprised... I'm not real happy with the mileage I get, no matter how much I baby it. Even with the big wheels/tires I was expecting 17-18mpg on the hwy....

I just hit 5500 miles on my crewcab long bed 4x4. In a nutshell, this engine is the REAL DEAL. It's a big heavy truck but this motor makes it feel light.
I recently towed a 23ft 5500lb travel trailer with a full bed including 2 dirtbikes, a quad and a generator, carrying 4 people and 2 dogs up the cajon pass here in CA and I had to LET OFF the gas going up the grade! This motor is a monster
My 04 with the 4.6L topped out at 45mph towing up the same grade. The 3.5 ecoboost could easily go 80+ uphill with 7000lbs+ if you let it.
I did notice I get better mileage with 91 octane vs 87.
* My only complaint is Ford hasn't come out with a turbocharged v8
