New exhaust and air intake?
New exhaust and air intake?
Hi,
I'm new to the forums and just recently purchased a 2008 f150 with the 4.2 v6. I was wondering what would be a good after market exhaust that I can just put in place of the stock one to give it a little more rumble.
I had a 03 dodge 1500 with a small v8 and had flowmaster 40 series catback duals. They sounded good in that but I wasn't sure how it would sound in a v6 so I was curious what you guys were putting on your motors and how do they sound. Also what would be a good open air intake for this truck. I figured these would be good accessories to add to let the motor breath a little better and hopefully get a little better gas mileage as well as performance.
Thanks in advance,
Glen

The 4.2l sounds ok with the Flowmaster 40... I ran a SIDO with dual staxx at one point, and it sounded great. I took them off to redo the piping, and never got back to it. I will eventually.
I'd do a home-made air intake... the K&N one is far too expensive to pay for itself, at least with this engine. Also, stick with premium paper filter when going this route. You will be less likely to foul the MAF sensor with the oil from a K&N. You can make one by using some piping and rubber hose fittings for sewers. Like schedule 40 pipe and rubber adapters work great, then band-clamp a nice filter onto it. Try not to do too many bends and such. If you search around the site, you'll find some good suggestions. If you do go the schedule 40 solution, paint it flat black with some rustoleum for plastic.

Keep em coming.
K&N intake will pay for itself on a 97-03 style depending on your gearing, but yeah 04+ it adds a little extra mpgs, some added power is nice. i had an 04 heritage(03 style) that went from getting 18.9 to 23.5mpg combined driving. that exact intake is now on my 08 4.2L f150 and it gains maybe 1-2 extra mpg but i have 3.55 gears, my 04 had 3.08s. the method manualf150 was mentioning is also called the "gotts mod" use the search tool on this forum to find instructions for it. and the oil on the mass airflow sensor is right but only if you over-oil it. i have had my intake on my 04 for 20k and my 08 for almost 38k with no problems like that. but to be safe try maybe an amzoil or another "dry filter". you will want a high flow and re-washable filter. for exhaust, good luck, i have only heard 3 that i have liked on the 4.2L. if i remembe rcorrectly, they were all magnaflows. i think stock tone is the 4th best ive heard.

I was looking at K&Ns website and I couldn't find an open air intake kit for my v6. All that I saw was just the stock replacement. Is that right or am I not looking for the right kit? Also will the gotts method void the power train or extended warranties?
Mine has 355 gears too with an automatic. I took a quick drive when I first got it and it got 22 mpg. So hopefully it will stay right there in that range. Ok I'll look at the k&n air filters and see what I can find. So in your 08 you gained about 1-2 mpg going with the new air filter?
Thanks,
Glen

oh yeah, i forgot about that. K&N does not make intakes for 06+ V6 f150s. i already had mine for my 04 heritage and took it off when i traded it in for my 08. since i already had it, i used it. but it did require some rigging/drilling to make it work. really the difference is the mass airflow sensor being a different shape. i think Volant or Airaid makes the intakes for your truck, or the gotts which from what i understand, is completely reversible. and apparently it is pretty chepa too. i paid $305 for my intake.

22mpg? i am hoping that is highway driving...if that is combined then you are lucky you are getting that good of mileage. mine stock maybe got 20 highway and i have a 5spd manual. with my intake on a good day i might see 22mpg if i would drive 65mph, which i dont...

I also had another question about the air intake. I've been reading and a lot of people say that you have to have a tuner when you put on the intake or the engine will run to lean and sputter some times. Is that true? Also with a new muffler would I need a tuner?
Thanks for all of the help,
Glen
Worthless post in this thread.
An Intake and Exhaust will prove only about 1 hp, and maybe .00001 MPG's. The best thing you can do is GOTTS mod, might prove a slight gain.
Well heres a video of true duals Flowmaster 40's with a MAC Cold Air Intake

I also got pictures of my exhaust if you want...

Thanks for the help guys I think I'm just going to leave the stock intake alone. I might put a muffler on though. I won't need to do a tune just by adding like a flow master 40 or a magnaflow would I? Also would a glasspack work on this truck? It seems like eveything I read says I won't gain a whole lot with the exhaust but I would just like something that sounds decent.

Also I had a glasspack on my old 94 I6 and I was wondering what that would sound like on my new v6?
Thanks for the help,

Most likely they will sound the same.
Yes I used an X-pipe. Not really needed on any truck, beyond all of these "beliefs" on here. Most of them bitch about the .0000000001 of a horsepower you might not get out of a Flowmaster compared to a Glasspack or MagnaFlow.
