I have a stock '99 F150 base w/4.2 & auto, 254,000 + miles. Engine is smooth and strong, if maybe a little breathless at highway speeds.

A friend of mine has a '07 with the same basic setup, just different radio and styling changes. Mine will run rings around his. Don't know why - maybe newer is heavier? Different emissions controls robbing power? I dunno - but seems like the older ones had significantly more pep.

old body style(97-03 and 04 heritage) is lighter than the newer body style. i had a 04 heritage V6 2wd manual reg cab longbed and it weighed 3897Lbs. i now have an 08 V6 2wd manual reg cab shortbed and it weighs 4364Lbs. both according to the weight on my state registration. and also i know the garage i bought the 04 from lowered the weight so it would be in a lower weight class. it was a few Lbs over so they lowered it by about 20Lbs on paper to save me some money. so still it was only about 3920Lbs. and that is a longbed. also out of the shortbeds, apparently the stepside and flareside are heavier than a styleside(straight) bed. engines from 97-05 are the same and 06-08 were changed a bit. they all have 202hp but 06-08 has 260 torque comapred to i think 252 in the older ones. but the torque hits its peak in the older ones at a lower rpm but the newer ones hit the hp peak at lower rpms. so really they shouldnt be too different powerwise. only difference i realized was that the newer ones seem to fall on their face(lose all their power ) at 5k rpms. the older ones still had some power till they hit their limiter at 5400. newer ones have a limiter of 5200. those are manuals, autos i think are higher limiters. not sure.

^ understatement. hope you have 3.55s or higher... if you have the 3.31s or the 3.08s , you can say to your engine or tranny or both after a bit.

My truck is a 2000 f150 4.2 auto and i dont know but if you try todo a burnout the engine just revs to 2k and the truck doesnt move. if you let off the gas a little then the truck starts to lurch forward but it still doesnt spin the tires. the tranny slips into 3rd gear and i am most likely getting a 4.6 thrown in later this year or hopefully in the summe. i wAs just wondring if it is the tranny that wont allow it to spin the tires or its just the gutless engine.

Your trucks a dog. Mine can powerbrake just fine. Even when it was stock on 265/75/16's.

some are dogs. i am in contact with someone on youtube who watched one of my 08's videos and he was asking why mine accelerates so well. he said he will get on his like for passing and stuff and it will bog down. then when he lets off a little, it finally gets going but only like half of mine. and he has pretty much the same exact truck. maybe minus the tow hitch, not sure. but i know the setup is exactly the same, including A/C. and mine with A/C on is only a little slower that without it on. he said he took his to the dealer and they said it was fine. i told him to go to a different dealer or a few different ones to get it checked. said he has no codes showing up too.

So rather than respecting what he was given and taking care of it; he drained the oil out at drove it till it blew. Not only did he destroy a perfectly good working car, but his parents went out and bought him a new Mazda 3! Talk about teaching bad habits... Do something stupid and get rewarded for it... I don't have kids, but if I did and they were that disrespectful, they could take the damn bus.

I feel sorry for the Mazda, I really do.

Sorry for the soapbox, but this stuff pisses me off.
I may drive a V6 with manual locks, windows and rubber floors - but I still treat her like a Ferrari.

...on a side note, I find it ironic that my 420th post is not very chill...
haha same here (except I got a viper alarm and 22 inch rims)...my truck is cleannnn, spotless, I haven't had any problems with my truck...

First of all, why are you kids trying to do burnouts in a relatively small 6-cyl truck? Face it - it wasn't designed to be a stop-light drag racer. It's a freakin' TRUCK, not a race car!

I pull a light travel trailer with my '99 4.2 - it weighs about 3,000 lbs. - and it does just fine. It'll cruise at 65 pulling the trailer all day with no problem unless we're in hill country, in which case, yeah, it has to work kinda hard to keep the speed up. It does it, though...

If you want to be a boy racer, get a Mustang. If you want to haul or carry stuff, get a truck.
