Anybody over 100,000 miles with factory engine
When you have to replace the radiatior
When you have to replace your radiatior like I did it would be a good idea to get one that is an upgrade or larger core. This keeps your engine cooler may even increase you gas mileage.
4.2 engine
Thank God when I got my 97 f150 XL shortbed stepside the previous owner replaced the engine with a 2003. The guy ripped me off on the back window though. It leaked like a sieve until I spent about $500 or more in repairs on it. The glass company did a crappy job of repairing it the first time and I finally had to take it to Raleigh NC about 1 1/2 hr drive. Other than that it stills needs some things done but will get to it when the money is there. But it has not failed me yet.
You guys that bought 1997 and 1998 4.2's used *should* have done some research before buying it, and if you went ahead and bought them, you should have had the appropriate work done. It's not like this issue was kept a big secret.
I mark it up as a lesson learned, but it still ticks me off.
Any new body style owners with high mileage?
I read the following and wonder if it'll be true for me.
"According to Consumer Reports's used car reliability history data, the 2004-2008 F-150 with the 4.2 L V6 engine is the most reliable American pickup truck ever produced in history."

mines now at 210K KMs (windows calc... 131500 miles) got it at at 125k from the dealer and picked up the waranty too. Since then ford rebult the rear end (new everything except axles) and did the rear main (28 hours according to the book). My 2000 bucks worth of warrenty was a much better invest ment then the markets. Not a bit of work to thing to the trans (just fluid changes). Turns out I know the prevouis owners son, his dad used it to pull his 26 foot travel trailer around. So its not lived a pampered life as it is a farm truck now and i got it when i was 16. The only time i had a drive ability issue was when the igniontion pack cracked and let water in even then it drove to shop. Its left me on the side of the road just once thats when the tie rod gave up the ghost rather suddenly and dramaticly (the rust must have been holding it as it had no play two weeks before at the oil change), but thats a ford problem in general. As for the this truck it has with out doubt been the most reliable truck my family has ever owned period. You just cant kill them.

2001 F150 XLT 4.2 with 145,000 have had no problems with motor only things I've had to replace are Power steering pump @ 95,000... clutch @110,000 and alternator @120,000......... Has been a great running truck and Im not easy on it
I have a 98 4.2L with 111k miles on it and all I have had to do to it is the usual plugs, wires, clean the K&N and oil and fuel filter changes at regular intervals and it it runs like the day I bought it brand new.
I'm still only at 84k, but all I've had done was get the drivetrain replaced (used to be a work truck, then I used it for fire response/off roading...and I dont exactly drive like a granny...)
But other than that, its just been oil changes, air filter changes, tires, etc... nothing major yet (knock on wood)

I got 201,155 on my 1997 stepside 4.2l 5 spd. Only major thing I did was replace the clutch 4 years ago. I did it myself in a shop I used to work out in long island. Still going strong! The ABS light is on, that's about it. I bought an ABS scan tool that cost $350 to find out what's wrong, the damn scanners useless.
Working on 142K on my '98. I just refinished the passenger side bed panel after pulling off the trim. Only major services were 2 new A/C compressors, 1 complete A/C system, 4 new Alternators, last one grenaded, new hoses for the fuel vent lines(not sure what technical term is they run along the frame into the engine) and an O2 sensor and about 7 sets of plugs.

That truck made this Chevy guy have respect for ford trucks!
