Exclamation 5 Speed 4.2 Problems

I'm looking for people who are having problems shifting with their five speed manual transmissions. I am are trying to see if this is possibly a new and undeclared manufacturing defect. As in previous posts I have a 99 F150 17K miles and I'm on tran #4. Perhaps if many people are having the same problem, and we all raise our voices, something can be done. (I have the tel # of the Ford Executive Office if anyone is interested.)

Cool

I have problems shifting from 1st-2nd. It is very tight most of the times, but at other times, it slips right into place.
(sounds kind of sick when you read this, hee hee)

I'm also on rebuilt tranny #4. This one has lasted longer than any of the others. 44K miles total. I finally learned that the tranny is weak and doesn't shift for s#$t. So, ever since it has been out of warranty I've been easy on it.

After speaking with the Ford's C2 Division customer service manager, I've found there's a lot more to these transmission "problems" than meets the eye. It's very apparent that most of these "problems" don't tell the entire story, just the parts you want everyone to hear. Wouldn't that be correct, Mister Albert? After speaking with the C2 manager on Friday, who most graciously gave up 30 minutes or so of his time, I learned everything I've said previously in regards to this transmission is true, i.e. very reliable, trouble free, etc. If all of you would tell the ENTIRE story, I don't think anyone would be too sympathetic to your plight. I think Steve Eppinger would probably think very hard about turning this into a pay site so that not just anyone could come on here and use this as a platform to begin a smear campaign against Ford or an individual dealership. I've also learned my original feelings and instincts were dead on.

If enough people let Ford know about this shifting problem maybe they will do something about it. I have phone numbers to the Ford C2 rep and Ford Exet offices. If anyone would like these numbers just visit my website and leave me an email and I will get them to you.

I've posted more detail in other topics on this subject, but in summary:

I've had an occasional hard upshift to 3rd since the truck was new. Otherwise the transmission is great.

Dealer has a new transmission on order for me under warranty. Dealer did not give me a hard time.

It is a 2000 F150 with 4.2, less than 8K miles.

Scott D

I hope you have better luck than I have had.

I tought everthing was going to be fine after they put the 1st trans in. I was wrong.

Then on the 2nd one someone (either Ford or the dealer) did not tighten the drain plug and it fell out. I did not know and I drove it on some errons. That didn't do it to good. It was damaged so they replaced it.

The 3rd one was hard to shift right after they put it in. I told the dealer and other dealers about it. They told me nothing was wrong. Not long after that it would not shift into 1st gear and it would grind from 2nd to 3rd. They replaced it. Now i'm on trans number 4. I think something else with the truck is causing this.

Good luck to you.

Interesting idea that something else might be causing it. Do manual transmissions have any of the electronic control interfaces like the automatics do?

I'll keep everyone posted on how this goes.

Since it's a free world, I thought I'd say that I never had a problem shifting gears on any of my FORD trucks. Never had a problem going into any gear, at any time. Even at minus 30 degrees, during Canadian winters.

Scott D: There's nothing electronic about these transmissions. That's the beauty. Simplicity! If you know what you're doing, manual transmissions are very simple to operate. But, it's kind of like playing the guitar. It takes practice and understanding...

Ford "man": Get outta here!

Here's how I figure it. My 17-year-old computer-nerd son is very smart but, after countless lessons, I am convinced he will NEVER be able to drive a manual up a hill from a start, and he should only drive automatics. I've tried to explain what a tach is and he just doesn't get it. I've given him simple books on how motors work. Total blank stare.

Nothing wrong with that! I love and respect my son, but I've basically booted him from driving my trucks.

All you dads out there -- try to teach your kids (CALMLY! It's tough, I know) to shift gears and to work a clutch. It's becoming a lost art. If you don't, FORD and every other American manufacturer will "shift" over to automatics so the new generation of young, mechanically incompetent, North Americans don't butcher their transmissions under warranty and cost them an arm and a leg.

Sorry. That's my opinion. I'm not saying any of you who posted here are incompetent. My 14-year-old daughter is anxious to learn how to shift gears. Posted with respect.

Actually, "Incompetent Driver" was listed on the work order as the reason Ford is replacing my brand new transmission. :^)

Well, the dealer installed my new 5spd transmission today. Upshift to 3rd is greatly improved! I guess I'd gradually gotten used to it being so difficult. I'll post again after a few thousand miles.

I've seen about enough. Ford Man, regardless of your input in the past, your current attitude and numerous complaints have forced me to revoke your posting rights. Name calling and insults will not be tolerated here.

I suspect, like others in the past, the you will re-register to use these message boards, in clear violation of the terms of usage. I will not hesitate to notify (the southwestern utility concern) or any other service provider you choose to use.
