How cool should my transmission run?
What temperature is too low and what is too high. Does the autotap measure at an accurate place?
I installed a mag-hytec tranny pan in the V-10 excursion (4R100) today. According to the AutoTap the max temperature I saw was 147*.
The following were the conditions: rolling hills, 80/85 mph for about 40 miles, overdrive, 3.73 gears, no towing.
I know I should have looked at the temps with the regular 4x4 pan before I switched, but I didn't even think about it. According to the factory gauge it is running cooler, but that gauge is a joke it will stay in the same location from 110 to 145 or so...

The cooler bypass valve on the 4R100 should maintain your fluid at a minimum of about 125 -140 degrees at the solenoid, not knowing where your temp sender is I don't know what your guage will read. The converter will not lock up until the internal temperture reaches I think 90 degrees, but I'm not sure of that, might be as high as 125.

Why does my Lightning run hotter than the excursion? They have the same tranny right?

Not sure on the 4R100, but the 4R70W has a sensor inside the tanny called the TOT or the transmission operating temperature sensor and it's located on the transmission main control inside the sump according to my ATSG service manual for the AOD-E which is the basis for the 4R70W. I would assume the 4R100 is very similar if not the exact same.

F150Forever - I've not installed one of these gauges but I don't think you want it installed where you've got it.
The whole purpose for the gauge is to tell you at what temp. your transmission/transmission fluid is at. If you take the temp. after it goes through the radiator, then you are defeating the purpose of having a guage. You have no idea what temp. your tranny is operating at.
I would think the temp. sensor would do you more good if it were installed as close to the tranny as possible on the line going from the transmission to the radiator - this should be the hottest transmission fluid that you have (and the temp. that you want to know).
To everyone else - If I've said something inaccurate or you think that I'm just plain wrong, then please correct me - because that is where I plan on hooking up the temp. sensor when I finally get that gauge.
