How cool should my transmission run?

What temperature is too low and what is too high. Does the autotap measure at an accurate place?

I installed a mag-hytec tranny pan in the V-10 excursion (4R100) today. According to the AutoTap the max temperature I saw was 147*.

The following were the conditions: rolling hills, 80/85 mph for about 40 miles, overdrive, 3.73 gears, no towing.

I know I should have looked at the temps with the regular 4x4 pan before I switched, but I didn't even think about it. According to the factory gauge it is running cooler, but that gauge is a joke it will stay in the same location from 110 to 145 or so...

Normal temperatures are about 40-80 degrees above ambient with an unloaded vehicle. You're about right.

The factory gauge has a MUCH wider "normal" range than you think. It is a lot larger than what you listed.

So how does that work if ambiant temps are 0*?

The transmission will run cooler.

There is a bypass that will keep most of the fluid from going to the cooler until the transmission warms up, which might never happen when it's zero, especially with a larger, finned aluminum pan.

So, at 0* ambiant the tranny should run optimal at 50-80*? At 100* the tranny should run 150-180*?

Mark is right on.. Ever since I've been monitoring mine (1 month) it goes anywhere from 135-155. Temperatures here have been 78-90 degrees. I used the port on the passenger side right above the drain pan.

The cooler bypass valve on the 4R100 should maintain your fluid at a minimum of about 125 -140 degrees at the solenoid, not knowing where your temp sender is I don't know what your guage will read. The converter will not lock up until the internal temperture reaches I think 90 degrees, but I'm not sure of that, might be as high as 125.

I can't help with temperature info, but I can help with degrees°, haha.

Hold down the Alt key and then press the numbers 0176 and then release and voila!

Alt-0176=°

Lets try it:
The outside temperature is now 50° and I'm on the coast of SC in November.

I know, not much help right.

Not sure where the sender is. The AutoTap reads the temp from the computer so where does the computer get the temp?

Why does my Lightning run hotter than the excursion? They have the same tranny right?

Not sure on the 4R100, but the 4R70W has a sensor inside the tanny called the TOT or the transmission operating temperature sensor and it's located on the transmission main control inside the sump according to my ATSG service manual for the AOD-E which is the basis for the 4R70W. I would assume the 4R100 is very similar if not the exact same.

So, I want the temperature to be at least 125° and no more than what?

No more than about 230F. If you ever get to 230 F, idle the truck in park or neutral until the transmission cools below 200F. A fast idle, like 1200-1500, will cool it quicker.

I just installed a mechanical gauge in the line right after it exits the radiator cooler and before it goes to my aux. cooler. After a few trips around the block (no load) the temp = 122. Does this sound OK?

F150Forever - I've not installed one of these gauges but I don't think you want it installed where you've got it.

The whole purpose for the gauge is to tell you at what temp. your transmission/transmission fluid is at. If you take the temp. after it goes through the radiator, then you are defeating the purpose of having a guage. You have no idea what temp. your tranny is operating at.

I would think the temp. sensor would do you more good if it were installed as close to the tranny as possible on the line going from the transmission to the radiator - this should be the hottest transmission fluid that you have (and the temp. that you want to know).

To everyone else - If I've said something inaccurate or you think that I'm just plain wrong, then please correct me - because that is where I plan on hooking up the temp. sensor when I finally get that gauge.
