How do I find a Mechanic for gear swap?

I badly want to swap my gears from 3.55 to 4.10 but I'm am unsure of how to find a qualified mechanic. I only have 2 recommendations and only one of them is from someone I know. I need someplace that will warranty the work. 4 wheel parts is out. I thought about going to a dealership but one they are high and two I have not heard alot of positive things about the Ford service departments. I know this is a blanket assumption on service dept's but it's all I have to go on right now. any help would be appreciated.

Pick up the phone book and call some tranny shops and mechanics. Get their opinion on who does a good job with gears in your town. If a lot of them answer with the same guy then you may have stumbled onto something. Check out your yellow pages for 4X4 shops as well. Most of those guys do gears and have a lot of experience doing them.

F150intally is right off road shops are your best bet. They will have a lot of expierence with gear swaps and rebuilds. That is what they do most of for all the guys who get lifts and bigger tires. They also tend to back up the work and have good prices too.

Big Burg,
how do you like your Precision Gears. What ratio are you running? I'm moving to 4.10s and am looking at Precision and Yukon. Both about the same price. Any suggestions?

If you have a 2 wheel drive and the 9 3/4" rear, be damn sure you have it in writing that they will be noise free!

Some 4.10 gear sets have a slight whine that wouldn't be noticeable in most 4WD trucks.

F150intally, So far I am very happy with my precision gears. I have the 3.55 gears but I to want 4.10's. I was going to go with 4.10's but at the time I did not have the money to do the front diff. I need to use 4 wheel drive for work so doing the rear end and getting the front latter was not an option. Yukon gears are good but I would have to give the edge to precision between the two. Overall US gears are in my opinion the best though.

To find a qualified mechanic for your gear swap, you can start by doing the following:
  1. Ask for referrals: You can ask friends, family, or co-workers if they know a reputable mechanic who specializes in gear swaps.
  2. Check online reviews: Look for online reviews and ratings of mechanics in your area. Websites like Yelp or Google Reviews can be a good place to start.
  3. Research local shops: Look for local auto shops that specialize in performance upgrades, such as gear swaps.
  4. Check for certifications: Make sure the mechanic is ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified, as this indicates that they have received training and have a certain level of expertise.
  5. Ask about warranties: Make sure to ask about warranty options for the gear swap. Reputable mechanics should offer a warranty on the work they perform.
  6. Get a quote: Before committing to a mechanic, it's important to get a detailed quote for the work that needs to be done, including the cost of parts and labor. This will help you compare prices and make an informed decision.
You could also consider reaching out to aftermarket parts retailers or performance shops that specialize in gear swaps. They may have a network of trusted mechanics they can recommend.
